CarComplaints.com Notes: The second generation Durango was introduced in 2004 and instantly came under fire for, well, catching on fire.

From 2004-2006 electrical overloading in the driver's side instrument panel caused numerous reports of interior fires. The interior infernos became so commonplace that Chrysler eventually issued a recall.

The problems didn't stop there, however. Owners of the recalled vehicles complained about being treated unfairly and given take-it-or-leave-it low ball settlement offers. "They offered me $2000 under NADA retail as a settlement," said one owner, "and have been rude and hostile to deal with." Nothing says awesome service like treating your customers rudely after their cars have already caught on fire.

Rusting near chrome piece that covers rear latch on rear door or hatch. It's a small spot but will grow, plan to try and fix it soon, or at least slow it down. My guess is there is poor water run off in this area.

i TAKE CARE OF MY VERY EXPENSIVE SUV. I KEEP IT CLEAN. I WASH AND WAX IT . AND MOST OF ALL I KEEP THAT DARN ROAD SALT OFF OF IT. SO I DID NOT EXPECT TO SEE ANY RUST SPOTS COMING UP ESPECIALY THIS BIG. HERS A FACT THERE ARE NO RUSTS SPOTS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE JUST UNDER THE GAS FILL. NOW I LOOK AT OTHER DURANGOS ON THE HIGHWAY AND SEE THAT THEY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

Durango SLT 5.7L

My 2005 Dodge Durango is rusting on the rear hatch where the chrome molding meets the painted rear hatch panel. Rust is bubbling up near each end of the molding. My vehicle only has 45,000 miles on it and dealership Des Moines Chrysler refuses to fix it because it's not rusted all the way thru. They said if there is no perforation there is nothing they can do. This is a known problem with this model of vehicle due to the chrome molding being sharp on each end and no seal in between it and the painted panel. So I called Chrysler customer service and talked to a supposed Senior customer service rep that called my dealership then told me that since it is not rusted completely thru it will not be covered under the 5 yr 100,000 rust warranty. I advised them that it is a design flaw so they need to cover it as I have personally seen multiple Durangos rusting in the same place. I told the customer service rep that I wanted to talk to her manager but she refused and said she has been given the authority to make the decision and there is nothing I can do. I asked her if she thought it was acceptable for every vehicle that Chrysler has produced to be rusting after only 4 years, she replied that she didn't say that and she cannot approve a good will repair per policy. I advised her if Chrysler does not fix this, I will never purchase another Chrysler made vehicle. This did not faze her at all, so much for customer retention. No wonder Chrysler filed for bankruptcy. I then wrote a letter to my Dealer and to Chrysler, though I doubt if I'll get a response.
