During the first hundred miles of our cross country Thanksgiving Trip, the Honda Odyssey power steer pump started making a load whining noises that changed pitch with the RPMs of the engine. The power steering was still operated but not a full capacity. We stopped for the night and found this sight with similar problems on the 2004-2006 models. Well it looks like the 2007s are not spared the problem. We dropped the Honda off at Rick Woodson Honda for repairs and we rented a van for the rest of the trip. Picked the van up on the way back home.

Power steering pump making whining noise. Took to dealer, but of course, it didn't make the noise then. Had a buddy listen to it and he knew instantly that it was the power steering pump. Took back to dealer and told them to check the pump. They replaced it under warranty. Based on what I have read, I am concerned about it happening again with the new pump. I guess we'll see. If it does, I will refer them to this website for documentation of this problem.

went to the dealer today to have them check the pump and they said it would cost $89 for diagnosis. I told them the car only had 16,000 miles and was under warranty and the service manager agreed to take a look. they found nothing wrong, pump was quiet of course, as it takes 45 minutes of driving before it starts to groan. the service manager gave me the impression that the pump would have to fail in order for him to act. I told him it would be a shame if the pump were to fail while my wife was driving the car and her safety was compromised. we left on good terms, but I am disappointed that a possible safety issue was not resolved.

This problem is annoying as you can imagine but to make matters worse, the mechanic acts like you are a complete moron for even suggesting something doesn't sound quite right!!!
When push came to shove it was a known factory defect relating to the power steering pump reservoir sucking air....which apparently was a known design flaw. They didn't mention it to me when I had my recent oil change, only told me about it after the complaint!!! Shame on me for thinking that they would volunteer the information.
