NHTSA — Steering Problems

2009 Pontiac G6 (Page 3 of 15)

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 is starting to have the same problems as previous model years, including the headlights blowing out due to bad connectors.

The wiring harness connections aren't a big deal to replace, as long as your dealer or mechanic doesn't charge you an arm & a leg to "diagnose" the problem.

The contact owns a 2009 Pontiac G6. The contact stated when his daughter turns on the vehicle, the steering wheel shakes unexpectedly. Also when the vehicle was being driven, the front of the vehicle shakes while the power steering warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer (champion Chevrolet of fowlerville grand ave, fowlerville, mi 48836) and was told a related recall ended as of January 2019. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact referenced the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 14V153000 (steering). The approximate failure mileage was 145,000.

The power steering in my car is incredibly bad. If I start my car, I cannot turn the wheel at all, it needs a large amount of force to turn. If I turn the car off and start it up again, its good as new...until I start driving. If I am driving to a place that takes 25 minutes, it will lock up atleast 3 to 4 times. This morning while turning onto the highway, it locked up and even when I tried to pull over and start it up again, it stayed locked.

My 2009 Pontiac G6 2.4L displayed power steering. It became manual steering. I turned the car off & restarted it. The power steering worked again. I was in a parking lot. I checked my cars invoices & the VIN # check which said I had the work done. I also was driving in my driveway & the wheel would start to turn then lock up & snap back hurting my wrist. I was able to park it.

Sometimes the steering wheel is okay to drive then while in drive, it will suddenly lock up causing the vehicle hard to control.

The power steering has completely stopped working. For about a week, the power steering was intermittently acting up, when I would start the vehicle. Eventually, the power steering would go out while driving, and a message of power steering would appear on the dashboard. My regular mechanic says that this is the result of a faulty power steering torque sensor.

While driving vehicle power steering assist quit on multiple occasions. This was corrected temporarily after shutting vehicle off and restarting it. I had at least a dozen episodes of this and it appears to be happening more frequently.this would occur at times when first attempting to drive and after I had slowed down to make a turn. I have not noticed it while at idle. I am concerned of this preventing me from steering in a critical situation. I am trying to use this car as least as possible until it is corrected.

I was driving home from school and at the intersection that I take everyday on a busy road (boulevard). When I tried to turn right at the intersection the steering wheel locked and the car went straight in the opposite lane where a semi truck was coming my way. If the semi didn't brake for me I wouldn't be alive today. It was icy and I somehow got myself back in my lane after using all my strength to turn the wheel. This was my closet to death experience to this day and I have not been in the car ever since then. The car has been parked since winter and has not only threatened my safety but has cost my pocket book a lot of money. I find it suspicious that the previous year models were recalled for electronic assist power steering failure yet my 2009 was not and is equipped with the same power steering option. I'm hoping you guys want to make it right as it would be simpler and less drama than a wrongful death law suit.

Steering wheel started turning / shimmying by itself just when standing still, randomly. Started doing it while driving a few weeks later. Shimmy/turning wheel happened more often as time passed, while parked, driving, backing up, driving surface streets and freeways, and now my power steering light is on!"! it turns loosly to the right and tight to the left. I am beyond perturbed, as this should have been recalled with other years this model was made that did have recalls. All GM offered was a $100 voucher to use toward diagnostic fee. They told me that any extended coverage I had that could have been covered with this repair/fix expired the beginning of the month, but maybe I could get a dearler-assisted repair??!?! I'm afraid to drive anywhere, let alone the freeways. I'd like to add, I only have just over 62K miles on this vehicle and have never had a car have steering failure, ever., let alone imagine this at such low mileage! I swear, that if they don't resolve this and fix it it'll be my last GM car. Sad, after my dad poured his blood sweat and tears into this company for so many years. Smh. Maybe a class action lawsuit? how convenient to cut off a recall of this particular problem by manufacturing dates, when this recall wasn't even issued until 2014!! my mechanic is finding through his research that 'after market' parts are not necessarily fiixng the issue either. What the heck?! 62K miles on a 10 year old car and I need a new car" this isn't right!

While driving the electric power steering will randomly cut off without warning. This makes steering hard and almost impossible in some cases, depending on the driver. Also depending on if the vehicle is in a curve when the power steering quits, when this is the case it almost causes a wreck. This is very dangerous and keeps occurring. I have read lots of many other owners's accounts of experiencing the same thing. Sometimes you can stop the vehicle and turn it off and back on and it'll be okay but not always. This has happened lots on many different occasions. I'm going to put the first incident as the date of when it happened.

The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 188,000.

After starting the car on dry pavement in a parking lot the power steering failed and made it impossible to turn to get out of the parking stall. After trying to turn the steering wheel the power steering warning came on in the dashboard display. This made steering the car impossible. There is a recall out for this issue, but was not issued for my VIN. This is a known problem which is extremely dangerous and GM should do what is necessary to ensure their vehicles are safe for the public to drive and be safe while others are driving them.

My car, when driving, will have the electric steering lock up. My steering will be locked and I can't turn it right or left. This happened to me on a feeder road, and I had to slam on the brakes and restart my car to reset the electronic steering. Luckily no cars were around me or I would of collided with them. This is very scary if I were to drive on a highway I probably would crash. This has happened to be twice so far. Another time I luckily was in a low speed parking garage when it happened. I recently went to 2 Chevrolet dealerships. They said they would fix this for free because it was a recall. When I went into both they said the recall was expired and they would need to charge me. Please help me search if this is a recall because this is big issue with my car.
