The Check Engine Light started coming on close to a year ago for no reason. Took it to Toyota and they told me that it was not due to the last recall and it isn't covered by them to fix. Took it to the transmission guy (very reliable) and they checked it out. They told me that there is nothing wrong with my transmission. However, they said that my car will not pass the smog test in order to get my registration tags updated this year without replacing my transmission in order for the check engine light to come off. They said I'll eventually have to have it replaced just so that the stupid light stops coming on because the computer in the car believes there is something wrong the the transmission. I don't understand how this is happening! It almost feels like if I were to replace the transmission even though nothing is actually wrong with it, then what if this happens again? I feel like this is something that Toyota should be taking care of free of cost because it seems like it's a computer issue and that they should be responsible for fixing that. I expected my car to last me at least 10 years before I started having to replace any major parts like this. This is the only reason why I bought this damn car in the first place. I'm not sure what to do as my tags expire next month and I can't afford $2000 to replace a part that doesn't really need to be replaced.
