Huge win for car owners! All TSBs to be made public. The Center for Auto Safety just made the NHTSA (US Government) make public the full text of all TSBs from now on. They are the same organization that has petitioned the NHTSA & filed lawsuits to protect car owners over exploding gas tanks & other major safety issues. Whenever you drive in your car, you are safer thanks in part to a lot of work over the years by this small but very effective consumer advocacy group.

Please take a moment & say thank you by donating $5 or whatever you can to the Center for Auto Safety.

The hid headlights on our 2006 Prius will flicker or completely turn off while driving. It happens seemingly randomly, , one side will go out the other will stay on and visa versa or both will go out at the same time. There doesn't seem to be any condition that causes it to happen. If I turn the light switch off and then back on the lights will come back on again, sometimes seconds or minutes will pass and the lights will fail again.

My wife and I were driving on I-25 in Colorado and both of our headlights shut off on our 2006 Toyota Prius, fortunately I have reading about this problem so I turned them off and on again. I've been to three Toyota dealers with no help in sight. I would appreciate any help on this matter.

My 2006 Toyota Prius has a major safety issue. The left headlight has been intermittently going out for over two years now. Turning the light on to high or low beam does not change the status of the light at all, but usually it comes on again when the lights are turned off and immediately turned back on. Within the last two weeks the right headlight has done it twice. I was first aware of the left headlight problem during the spring of 2008 likely at that time with about 25,000 " 27,000 miles. I do not leave the headlights on during daytime driving so there has not been high usage the dealership acts like they have never heard of this problem before, and it might be a light going bad which will cost $300 per light bulb plus installation. But it has been doing it for over two years off and on a long time for a bad lightbulb to last. Totally frustrated after I once again gave the service representative a detailed description of the problem and had a different service rep come out and tell me there was no problem with my headlights, I googled this problem and I see repeated references to exactly the same headlight issues by other 2006 pries owners. Now that I see that this is not just my pries, but many priuses I am doubly concerned. It is not an event I am able to reproduce. The dealership says that they can't diagnose the problem if the lights are working and can"T reproduce it. I said I would gladly bring the car in at any time at night when it was doing it so they could diagnose it, but they can't accommodate me when the problem arises at night because they are closed nor can they suggest any place to take the car to have it tested at that time. Having two working headlights is a legal safety issue or the police would not stop and ticket or warm cars with this problem. Toyota needs to find a fix for this safety issue.

I own a 2006 Toyota Prius. The left front hid headlight intermittently goes out. I have to turn the lights off and then back on to get the light to go back on. This seems to be a common problem after researching it online. NHTSA needs to continue the investigation it started on this matter and require a recall for this dangerous condition.

On my Toyota Prius 2006, the passenger side headlight intermittently goes out for a period of time. Sometimes for an extended period, and sometimes for a short period. The dealership can't find a problem with the headlamp, because, even leaving the lights on all day, the light won't shut off. I can't determine the pattern for the light shutting off, and I often only know about the problem when someone alerts me to a dark headlight. This is a major safety issue because of the intermittent nature, and inability to detect the outage.

I have continued to have recurring headlight issues on my 2006 Toyota Prius. I am on my third headlight and I have replaced two headlight assemblies. On each occasion, we were made aware of the defective headlight by another party as we were driving. It leads to a dangerous situation because it reduces the lighted path at night and could potentially impair another driver's ability to see my vehicle. I had to pay out of pocket for the repair since the extended warranty that I purchased did not cover "burnt bulbs". this is obviously an inherent issue that Toyota has not addressed. Each repair is in excess of $200.

I have 2006 Prius, the driver side head light goes out and then as I am driving. It is unpredictable. If I turn the lights off and then back on, the light works again. I changed both head lights in city Toyota cost $560.72 on Dec.8,2008 and now May 27,2010, the passenger side headlight is not working. It only last 1-1/2 year, this is not acceptable.

I own a 2006 Prius and my headlights keeps going out randomly. I took it to the dealer and it was working fine the whole time. They checked it and couldn't find any problem. The technician told me this has been an issue for lots of Prius cars and told me if it stops working again, to hit it a little bit. This is safety issue and I just want to report this issue.

Passenger headlight cuts out without warning for no apparent reason. The only remedy is to turn the headlights off and then back on. This causes the head light to begin functioning for a short period of time.

I own a 2006 Toyota Prius. The headlights go out intermittently. When the lights are turned off and then back on, it seems to fix the problem. Took it to the dealer and they said since they were working at the time there was nothing that they would do. This is a huge safety issue. This has happened on several occasions now, going back a few months.

Re: Toyota Prius 2006 hid headlights problem - intermittent on and off for the past 10,000 miles solution: Dealer wants $600 labor to replace a bulb. Not covered under extended warranty. Dealer does not know if bulb is the problem, or starter, or other. Problem could costs thousands of dollars to troubleshoot! poor design means I cannot change it myself. Other Prius owners reporting similar experience.

Both headlights (hid) on a 2006 Toyota Prius failed 3 times last night. Turning off and on the headlights ( at highway speed!!!) corrected the problem. Toyota has previously sent out a letter noting the "payback of replacement hid" cost but for both to fail out of the blue is very suspicious.

This happens on a 2006 Toyota Prius. The head lamps fail, this failure takes place every 3-4 months. This has happened 20 times since the car was purchased 2006 March. The failure does not happen simultaneously, but the driver's side lamp will fail and then the passenger side lamp will fail. It is always the low beam filament that fails. This was reported to the dealership and at 90K mile check up, the dealership was asked to check the resistance, the voltage and the amps in each circuit for each head lamp. The stated there was no problem in this area. There is another electrical issue, but is seems to be not related. The horn will sound softly when stopped with the engine electrical or gas or both running. Thanks.
