Toyota says the mechanic needs to replace the evaporative canister, filter, hoses, and splash shield--for a charge to me of $1,135.00, which is not covered by any warranty or recall. Since neither the mechanic nor Toyota seem to know why this occurred, and the replacement parts are the same as those which need replacement--with no knowledge as to how they got saturated with water--my mechanic decided to try to dry everything out an put it all back, to see if that took care of the problem

RAV4 Model 2.4L 4 cyl

The mechanic's initial attempt to solve the problem by drying out the saturated filter resulted in the Check Engine, VSC, and Vehicle Slipping On Road icons disappearing for a total of 65 miles and less than 2 days. Those icons are all back on now. I haven't taken the car back in for this process yet, since neither the mechanic nor Toyota seem to know why the problem occurred in the first place, and all replacement parts are the same as the original parts...so, apparently, this problem will recur ramdomly--at a cost of $1,135 to me.
