Started the car on a sunny summer California day, was about 100 deg. Fahrenheit, dry. Check engine light came on suddenly after starting. Engine was revving high and felt like it barely had power. The transmission was shifting in a choppy and confusing manner. Couldn't go past about 30 MPH. Feels unsafe. (Turned the car off, then back on again. Same check engine light still on, same issue). Called the dealer (Infiniti of Cerritos, CA) and scheduled a service appointment which they had available only the next morning. I will probably have the car towed there. Will update on this matter shortly...

Update from Jun 27, 2022: 3 years later: from what I can remember, it started fine the next morning and hasn't had that problem since. My guess (as a former mechanic from the early 2000s) is that the extreme heat thinned out the CVT transmission fluid and it wasn't able to build pressure to shift the CVT belt into the proper gear ratio. It was one of those "freak" days... Cooling it down overnight helped.
