The contact owns a 2000 Land Rover Discovery II. While the contact was driving approximately 35 mph the brake pedal was engaged; however, the vehicle continued to accelerate. Immediately the gear was shifted into neutral while force was applied to the brake and then the emergency brake was engaged. The vehicle came to a stop and was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The technician stated the accelerator cable would need to be replaced. There was a recall related to the defect associated with NHTSA campaign id number 02V028000 (vehicle speed control); however, the VIN was ineligible under the recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact planned to notify the manufacturer of the unintended acceleration. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

Cruise control activates without driver input. Explanation: Cruise control is set (to speed 1) and used then the brakes applied which deactivates cruise control. Car is then accelerated (to speed 2) after stop. Occasionally, cruise control takes over (resumes without customer activation) and sets itself back to speed 1 (speed prior to braking). In some instances speed 1 is faster than speed 2 causing car to accelerate into traffic ahead of vehicle.
