Issue: Front driver and passenger seat belts do not fully retract despite completed recall service. The seatbelts often "puddle" behind the seats when unbuckled, and sometimes get trapped between their seat and adjacent door. My car was recalled and serviced under Mercedes Campaign 2021020010 to fix this in October 2021. Also, the right front seatbelt was replaced in October, 2018 under Campaign 2017050023. The first paragraph of the Mercedes Recall Campaign Bulletin states, "...certain C-Class Cabriolet vehicles (A205 platform) with PRE-SAFE might not meet the requirements of FMVSS 208, S7.4.5., as the front seat belts might not fully retract to its stowed position. In this case, certain regulatory requirements under FMVSS 208 might not be fulfilled. If the seatbelt webbing does not fully retract into its stowed position, the consumer may find the operation of the seatbelt inconvenient and not wear it, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash." In its step 1, the bulletin states, "The seat belt strap must retract into its final position automatically. Provide manual assistance with rolling up the seat belt strap if necessary." Having to provide manual assistance to retract the seat belt does not meet the definition of "must retract into its final position automatically". Further, it does not meet the aim stated in the bulletin's first paragraph about the importance of the seat belt fully retracting. The labor time spent on campaign was only 0.10 hours (6 minutes), so nothing more than a cursory inspection was done, and not any actual service work. I spoke with my local Mercedes dealer and the Mercedes USA customer service rep. They are both Ok with manually feeding the seatbelt into its slot. This is unacceptable and does not meet FMVSS 208. Both the dealer and the Mercedes USA say I can pursue proper fix at my expense. This is a failed recall service and I should not have to pay to explore a proper remedy.

The contact owns a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C300. The contact stated upon taking the front driver seat belt off she noticed, it was not fully retracting. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact also stated that the front passenger-€™s side seat belt was not fully retracting. The contact stated she received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V032000 (Seat Belts). The vehicle was taken to the dealer for recall repair; however, the dealer informed the contact that the seat belts did not qualify for the recall repair because the seat belts were fully retracting. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist because the vehicle recall history did not show that the VIN had been included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 2,500.

For the past several weeks the seat belt warning light goes on and the chime sounds intermittently while I am driving with the driver seat belt engaged. Also; while this is happening, the seat belt pretensioner repeatedly deactivates and activates. The vehicle is available for inspection at my home in Pleasant View, Utah. Can my safety be compromised if the pretensioner is not activated" Will the driver air bag function if it thinks the seat is empty" The Mercedes Dealer was no help; all the Customer Service person could tell me was there was not a Recall on my vehicle. "Just make an appointment and we will do a Diagnostic Inspection for $179." I have made an appointment with my local Mechanic on Thursday, July 29, and hope that he can fix it.

Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 17V251000 (seat belts) however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not taken to the local dealer. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact since the vehicle was not included in the recall, the vehicle owner was responsible for the cost of the repairs. I hit a bear in Montana in my 2017 Mercedes C300 at 86mph and destroyed the front of my car. The seatbelts deployed and wrenched us into our seats and smoke came out of the front air vents but the airbags did not go off. On the dash the vehicles stated that the airbags in all 4 zones in the car malfunctioned and service is required. Mercedes is stating that the light is from a seatbelt error code but the dash did not say anything about SRS or seatbelts. I do not want to put my family back in the car and do not feel it should be repaired. Please see attached photos of the error messages on the dash. I do not know how I can hit something that hard and not have them deploy. Mercedes is doing an internal investigation but they have not given me the results of that and it has been over 3 weeks. Vehicle was in for a airbag recall not takata related on January of 2018 and this was supposed to have been repaired.
