The contact owns a 2013 Mercedes-Benz E350. The contact stated while his wife was driving at 55 mph, the sunroof sliding door detached and fell on her right shoulder and head. The driver sustained headaches for a couple of days but did not seek medical attention. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the airflow panel to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised they would contact the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.

The panoramic sunroof exploded outward. When it occurred the sound was like someone fired a shotgun next to my head. I was driving northbound on I-25 just South of denver. Had the fabric sunshade not been extended forward so it contained the glass the occupants in the car would have been showered with the sharp shards, which were so sharp the pieces that flew back on the back window and trunk lid left deep scratches on those surfaces. Not sure how much glass was thrown up into the air and impacted traffic behind the car. Think about a motorcycle rider being hit by these flying shards of glass. This is not a safe situation with these cars and I hope you'll seriously look into this. Notwithstanding any injuries that may occur from such an incident, the explosive nature of this type of failure could very easily cause a driver to panic and/or be distracted enough to have an accident in traffic.
