2002 Mercury Cougar have faulty CD4E transmissions, however Ford will not admit to it because then they would have to pay millions to repair these vehicles in the USA and around the world. The transmissions are good for about 50,000-75,000 miles and after that you will experience slippage, banging, timing issues relating to gear shifting and leaking of transmission gaskets.

Additionally, the 2002 Cougar has issues with braking system as it relates to break switch which was ongoing problem from on set. Break lights have tendency to get stuck and switch was changed on more than one occasion to no avail.
