I was simply closing the hatch and the glass EXPLODED! It actually blew the window brackets out side the car. Glass flew into the car and about 8 ft outside the car. There was no slamming of the hatch. Just a simple closing and wow. Insurance will cover it to be repaired..... but they need to look into this. This is bad.

I merely closed the rear door on my 2011 Mercury Mariner and it exploded with such force that my garage had glass fragments from one side to the other. The garage door was closed and fortunately I was not standing behind the door or I could have been seriously injured. It was obvious that the dealer did not believe me that nothing had hit the door and he denied any knowledge of this happening before. I now know that he was not truthful as I found many reportings of this happening with the Ford Escape which I am told is the sister car to the Mariner. The dealer said they will fix the window but I feel very strongly that this must be reported since the many occurrences show this is definitely a defect in the window design. The day will come when someone is blinded or injured seriously from the flying glass.
