Brakes do not work properly after hard stop. Soft and slow to stop. This is extremely dangerous as it has happened to me at least 3 times in rush hour traffic. I replace the ABS unit a year ago with another used oem ABS unit.today after hard brake stop again I'm having the same issue (soft and slow to stop). I drove back to home I'm parked the car on my driveway and I can drive this car till to get a new ABS module. This is my first and last time that I'm going to buy a Ford or Mercury cars.

While driving on a city street, the brakes were applied in an emergency situation. The ABS system activated and the vehicle stopped. Shortly after this the when applying the brakes the pedal had excessive travel. The ABS pump was found to be defective.

Nothing bad has happened, yet. A couple of years ago, we noticed that the brakes became much softer. It became necessary to push further down on the pedal to engage them. We took the care to a shop in March of 2016. The mechanics checked the whole system, and thought it was the master cylinder, so he put a new one it. He called us to tell us, that wasn't the issue, so he removed it, and did not charge us. I did some on line searches, which I've continued, and saw that there were similar issues with that NHTSA was looking at, and heir might be a recall. I've continued to check every few months, or so, for the past 2 years, but still no word of a recap. I checked on muffed.com today, and Ford still has not recalled the problem. The only recall appearing for that car is the current air bag issue (16S26). My wife tells me that now she's used to it and that if it is a safety issue, Ford would recall it. I won't drive the car. I think it's a accident waiting to happen. I doubt this will accomplish anything, or that I'll get a response, but I'd like to know the status on this situation, and want to go on record as reporting it. Maybe Ford will take care of it eventually if enough people complain.

For a while when I would apply my brakes I would lose them in the fact that I would have to push them all the way to the floor. After this happened a few times I would have no brakes at all. My mechanics could not figure this out because after the car would sit or I pumped the brakes they would return until finally they just went completely. At this time I came to find out that the ABS system had to be replaced. They told me that this was a defect. The only company I could get the part from was Ford! no other company or after-market was compatable. Tell me Ford did not know about this"??" cost me over $1K

My daughter hit her brakes hard while driving on icy roads, and thereafter experienced the brake pedal going to the floor and increased stopping distances. I test drove her car and experienced the same thing. Due to being a safety factor, and the fact we live in the midwest where traffic conditions are often slick, we felt we had to get the brakes fixed for her safety even though she didn't yet get in an accident. You cannot safely drive a car where the brakes are liable to fail at any moment you have to hit them hard through no fault of your own. This should be recalled!

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Milan. The contact stated that there was a sudden loss of brake pressure. The brake pedal traveled to the floor, so the contact had to apply force to pump the brake pedal as the vehicle went through a red light. The dealer (flammer Ford of spring hill, 3335 commercial way, spring hill, fl 34606, (352) 686-8255) was notified. The contact, a mechanic, diagnosed that the hydraulic control unit failed to function and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer issued two technical service bulletins on the brakes, but there was no recall issued. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA action number: PE16017 (service brakes, service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

I have been having an ongoing issue with my braking system on the 2009 Mercury Milan. It usually starts as having to activate the brakes fairly quickly (either slamming on the brake in emergency, or stopping over a dirt road or slowing over a speed bump). The brake pedal will activate the ABS (pump 3-4 times) and depress clear to the floor without actually stopping the vehicle. Then immediately after and until I have the brake lines bled there is 0 pressure in my brake pedal (pedal continues to go to floor without completely stopping the car). I recently had the master brake cylinder replaced which only corrected the problem for a short time and have just had to take it back to the shop for the same issue. They told me everything "seems fine" and they can't find another issue with the system. Clearly this is a safety risk and Ford needs to do a recall on this issue!

Brake pedal goes soft and car fails to stop or takes prolonged time to come to a stop. If you pump brake pedal repeatedly the pedal will stiffen but gradually goes to the floor. The car has been to the dealer specifically for this problem at least twice with no resolution. Recently had dealer install new brake front and rear and this has not abated the problem. Printed documentation from NHTSA website and made the dealership aware of the NHTSA investigation. Dealership personnel stated they were aware of the issue but nothing formal has been issued from Ford Motor Company. Braking problem has been ongoing but periodic for almost a year. Latest occurrence was three times on mon 12/04/17.

I was driving up the hill & slowed down for the speedbump. I started applying the brakes to turn right into the driveway but the car lunged forward, causing me to miss the driveway & turn into the yard. As I stepped on the brake the car continued to speed up so I screamed at my husband "james I can't stop the car!" he yanked the handbrake up but it didn't stop or slow down and the engine made a continuous high pitched racing sound. We crashed into the house, damaging it & breaking my left arm! the car was totaled. All this occurred in just a matter of seconds. Fortunately our family was in another part of the house and weren't injured.

As a result, I needed increased distance to stop my car. If I needed to stop for traffic or a traffic signal this incident would have resulted into an accident. My brake pedal returned to normal sometime later. I have had three similar incidents happen while driving my car over an uneven road surface ( wet or dry) my brake pedal turns soft and goes to floor. As a result increased stopping distance was needed. My brake pedal always return to normal sometime later.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the brake master cylinder failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was contacted and informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,001.

After an anti-lock-brake-assisted braking maneuver, on both wet and dry road surfaces, the brake pedal goes soft, and requires extraordinary pressure to activate the brakes. I have experienced this problem on both wet road surfaces (for example, during or after rain) and dry road surfaces (for example, rough surfaces or other irregularities in the road). This problem has been occurring regularly for about a year. While the anti-lock brakes aren't used regularly while driving, the 5-6 times they have been activated in this time frame have incurred the problem. Afterwards, I have to apply much more pressure to the brake pedal to get the car to stop. This happens during normal stop-and-go type situations on both wet and dry road surfaces.

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Milan. While attempting to brake at 3 mph, the brake pedal dropped independently 1-2 inches and the vehicle took an excessive amount of time to slow down. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the master cylinder failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to benson Ford, Inc. (4701 calhoun memorial hwy, easley, SC 29640) where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic control unit failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, stated that there was no recall, and transferred the contact directly to NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 108,000.

ABS breaks fail twice within 6 months when my wife hit an uneven surface pulling into a driveway. The break pressure required her to floor the pedal all the way down to the floor in order to stop the vehicle. I'm extremely concerned. My wife pumped the breaks to get the vehicle's break pressure back to normal. We are concerned and don't when this could happen again. We are very fearful at this point. What if she was going at a faster rate of speed or approaching an intersection. There needs to be a recall for this. I checked online and this is a known issue. I contacted Ford in burlington NJ and carsense of westampton NJ both places to go to each other. Ford in lumberton gave me the Ford 800 number which I called but they provided me with empathy but no solution. If I drive over an uneven surface this evening it's possibility my breaks could fail again. Does someone have to die before someone takes action against this hidden danger.

I was driving on a road that was slippery due to icy conditions. I applied the brakes when a car stopped suddenly in front of me. I was able to stop but after the incident the brakes went"soft" and I had to apply extra force and pump the brakes to get the car to brake adequately. My mechanic thought it might be a problem with the calipers but fixed them. When that did not fix the problem he put in a new factory master cylinder which also did not remedy the situation. He then did some research and discovered that there have been issues with the ABS system. My car is still not braking properly.

There were no warning indicators illuminated. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was not filed and there were no injuries. The vehicle was damaged, but drivable. Meanwhile, the contact reported that there was an open investigation (PE16017) on brake issues related to the year, make, and model vehicle. Also, the contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17V024000 (air bags). The failure mileage was approximately 130,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Milan. While driving 25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. The ABS warning indicator illuminated. The contact engaged the emergency brakes four times in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The year, make, and model was included in open NHTSA investigation number: PE16017 (brakes) since December 20, 2016. The manufacturer stated that they would have the complaint reviewed, but there was no guarantee. The contact stated that she experienced the failure six to eight months prior. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.
