i have a 02 mountaineer. it was clunking in to park, reverse, and gears. then the od light came out with that the check transmission light and check engine light.i still drove the vehicle. finally had enough and brought it to a shop to get fixed at 170000 miles on it. it came out the same exact way. i brought it in and paid 2400 dollars for it. didn't have any choice i drove it until a couple weeks ago. 3000 miles before the rebuilt tranny warranty was up. they said it was a clog in a hose to the transmission. I'm really getting fed up with the transmission all together and the company want fix the so called clog. I don't know what to do. I'm bringing it to a new mechanic. like everyone is saying why isn't ford recalling this. we all put out so much money to so called fix the problem and the problem still happens. hopefully someone can tell me what to do to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Many of you who have spent a lot of money, you've been duped! My OD light began to flash and the "check transmission" light came on . It freaked me out. I went to a Mechanic friend who told me most shops will lie and tell you to rebuild the transmission in order to make money. He said all you have to do is flush the transmission fluid out. If you look at your maintenance schedule, it tells you to get a flush around 130k. Unfortunately dishonest repair shops make money on issues like this. It stinks. Hope this helps.....

Well, this is transmission #2. The first was replaced in 2009. Just like the first time, the O/D off light started flashing and the check transmission display came up in the info section on the dash. The first time I forked out $1500 and prayed everyday because it was not from an accredited shop (no warranty). This time, say goodbye to $2700. There goes my tax refund. The shop states it's something involving the third gear. He will not rebuild, but I am getting a remanufactured tranny with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty. Woohoo!! Can't afford monthly payments, so I have to deal with the costs. I just wish my vehicle was more reliable, and not so costly in such a short period of time.

If there's so many problems with this transmission issue why is Ford not willing to have it recalled. My husband has a Ford and we are selling it because FORD sucks. I will NEVER, NEVER buy another Ford car again. I have 3 kids and they will be driving soon..in about 2-4 years and I will not get them any type of Ford car or truck. My mom has a Ford and we are in the process of selling her car and getting something else.

Mountaineer

  • Automatic transmission

I've got a 2002 Mountaineer about 130,000 miles. My overdrive light started blinking and my check transmission light came on. It is in the shop right now. I've had to miss work and I cant afford that! Who only knows what its going to cost to repair it.

I go and put money into tuneups, oil changes, and tires NOT TO MENTION ALL THE PAYMENTS TO PAY IT OFF. The economy is to bad for people to be having to rebuild or replace transmissions. When this is a common thing to happen to Mercury' s transmission. WHY HAVE WE NOT SEEN A RECALL ON THIS???? The Mercury company has alot more money than all us customers. So why should the money come out of our pockets? We paid enough! This is Mercury's problem, and people say buy American vehicles! This is not a good way to keep people buying Mercury vehicles.

Mountaineer 4.6L

I found somewhere to complain since nobody else seems to understand where the hell I am coming from. I cannot believe the amount of complaints about the EXACT SAME ISSUES I am having with my car. Sometimes it will drive fine but 9 times out of 10, there is no getting on the gas, no sir. You can stomp the gas and the first gear hangs then the OD light flickers along with the check transmission light on the display. Then the first and second gear slip. I have noticed it getting worse and worse. I bought this car used at a good price and now I see why. I had just wrecked my old Mountaineer, a 1999 V8 5.0L and had ZERO problems out of it for 4 years until some asshole ran a redlight and destroyed my pride and joy, the first car I had ever owned. Then I ran across this one and it has had nothing but problems. Blood sucking vehicle. I am on the hunt for another 99 model with the 5.0L engine but no luck yet. I am very happy to have something to drive but I wouldn't trust this thing to more than a 50 mile radius from home b/c I KNOW the transmission is going to blow which is rather unfortunate since the car is in good shape other than the transmission issues. All leather interior, heated seats, sunroof, I even had my dad put Sirius radio in it but that doesn't even drown out the jerky weird transmission issues. I will be taking my damn radio with me too. Apparently the models made after 2001 are nothing but junk. Like I said, I owned a Mountaineer prior to this and never had a single problem with it. I kept the oil changed, bought spark plug wires for it and put gas in it. That was IT.

Mountaineer 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 130,200 miles

Just like the rest of you poor bastards...My 02 Mountaineer started with a flashing O/D light, just this morning with 130000 miles, now it clunks into third and back into 2nd. A slew of other issues have made it's appearance too, Rear air blower at 50K, smog sensor at 100K (which i had to fix for smog reasons), an air bag sensor at 105K.All of it still broken, my dash board looks like a freakin Christmas tree with all the lights on. Good thing is I got this car for free but I'll be dammed if i give my money away, Especially to FoRd. I'll take my 2500.00 bucks and go put a down payment on a Toyota. or a Honda. I have two Toyotas and both ar over 90000 Miles and I have yet to replace a single broken part. Before these two I had a standard Toyota pick up and put 380K on it before sold it and all it needed was a clutch. Big 3 Bail out? You have got to be @#$%ing kidding me! HAY FORD MAKE SOMETHING WORTH BUYING!
