The contact owns a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero. While depressing the brake pedal, the contact heard a noise coming from the passenger side of the vehicle. The noise was heard while driving 15 mph and can also be heard when the brakes are not applied. The repair shop stated that the accumulator, which is part of the ABS, needed to be replaced. NHTSA campaign id # 01V254001 (service brakes, hydraulic:power assist:vacuum) is related to his failure, however, the dealer stated that his VIN is excluded from the recall. The current mileage is 85,600 and failure mileage was 84,000.

My vehicle started making a noise when brakes were applied. I took to dealership and they informed me that my accumulator was bad. Some Montero's had this under recall, but they said mine was not covered and it will cost me $650 to replace it.

Brake warning and antilock lights come on the first and several subsequent times the brake pedal is pushed. The bake pedal is very stiff and hard to press at this point. A strange noise can be heard from the left side of the dash each time the brake pedal is pushed. These symptoms are identified in recall id 01V254001 but Mitsubishi states that my vehicle is not part of this recall.
