I was stopped at a stop light. Upon acceleration there was a loud thump. The transmission exploded sending parts of the transmission through the transmission case. My wife and kids were in the van. Someone could have been hurt if the parts exploded upward. I see several similar complaints for this model van on this site.

While at a speed of approximately 25 mph the automatic transmission dropped out of gear and the vehicle began coasting in K-mart store parking lot. I pulled the mini-van over to a parking space in the lot. After shutting the vehicle off, I restarted it and tried to engage the transmission in reverse, but failed. I then shut the vehicle off and had it towed to the dealer.

Prior to transmission failure car had been on highway at 65 mph with carload of kids on way home from a swim meet. Only off the freeway for 5 minutes and stopped to let a child out of car. Transmission "died" when attempted to go forward from having stopped in "drive" with brake on for passenger drop-off. I am so lucky this didn't happen on the freeway-it could have had terrible consequences!!! how can a car used for two years, five months with 52,000 miles need a new transmission?? we had the car repaired at dealer. After car returned something in shifting seemed slightly different but unable to define problem as it was "vague" symptom. On 02/15/99 (3 weeks later) I attempted to park car in driveway at home after driving and was unable to shift from drive to park-shift lever wouldn't move, finally went down to 3rd. Had car towed to dealer and told shift cable was now broken. Dealer claims this was not due to prior transmission service. Car returned on 02/19/99. Shifting lever now seemed slightly loose!! on 02/24/99 car returned to dealer again because shift lever now very loose and shifting gears on speed bumps-ie. Going from drive to neutral after bumps in school parking lot!! car again serviced on 02/24/99 and now seems ok. Total bills for service over $2000.
