The head gasket failed causing $1269 in repairs. Was told by local mechanic and by a Chrysler dealership mechanic that this is a known problem with Chrysler head gaskets and that there was a secret warranty. Chrysler denies that there is a problem with the head gaskets and that there isn't a secret warrant, and that since my vechile has over 100,000 miles, the secret warrant that doesn't exist doesn't apply.

While driving at 65 mph, the temperature gauge jumped to overheated at which point I pulled off the road. According to the mechanic my head gasket had blown, warping one of the heads in the engine. I was also informed at that time and have discovered subsequently through research that almost every Neon which reaches almost 60,000 miles blows the head gasket. In general Chrysler vehicles seem to possess a faulty head gasket which needs replaced around 60,000 miles which according to several automotive sources should not even be considered for service until the 100,000 mile mark.

Started leaking oil around 70K miles, took it to Chrysler dealer and reported to Chrysler, they stated there were no recalls, defects or tsb's, took it to mechanic, and they showed me the tsb on the vehicle, attempted to contact Chrysler again, and they stated that they would not do anything and it wasn't their problem. I have spoken to several mechanics who say that the head gasket is defective, but there is no recall. There should be! Chrysler manufactured a piece of junk, they should replace their screw ups.

Head gasket failure on our Neon and dealer admitted 40 failed head gaskets so far this year that he has replaced. Now in for repair at the dealer and have now been told that head is also bad because of the leak. They want $1,400 for a head that was damaged by what seems to be a re-occuring problem with this model. Your NHTSA service bulletin 09-05-98 indicates they did make a change in the type of head gasket. I regestered a complaint with crysler and the dealer has contacted crysler about our problem. The dealer indicated that crysler "might" help out and pay "some amount". of the head gasket bill. Early on with this problem we took it to a mechanic who replaced the thermostat, and flushed out the cooling system, and removed the radiator and had it cleaned. None of these problems fixed the problem and we took it back again. This is when he found the leaky head gasket. He called out to the dealer to find out if they had seen the problem before and they told him it was a common problem and they had replaced 40 so far this year. Now I have a $1,400 to $1,700 bill for a problem that crysler knows about or at least this local dealer has seen 40 times this year.

My car currently has a busted head gasket, which at this point will cost me $1400 (about 10% of what I paid for it). I find it unacceptable that Chrysler has just recently made a proper fix and will not recall vehicles to repair this problem. Owners have to pay out of pocket for an expense that is not a normal "wear & tear" or cosmetic thing. This is a major flaw-I'm surprised that people have not been seriously injured/died because how this broken gasket could blow the engine! of course, my little Neon doesnt compare with soccer-moms and their SUV's/mini-vans air bag issue, but please please put pressure on Chrysler to do a recall! if I had a clue to this when I bought the car 3 1/2 yrs ago, I would not have purchased it or at least have the confidence that a recall was ordered and the problem was fixed. Thanks for the oppertunity to let my feelings be known.

Head gasket failure, twice within a 6 month period. At 1st failure, a dealer told me the symptoms were "normal" for that car and if it gets worse to bring it back. Failure is slow and "blows" oil and coolant. Unlabored engine overheats. Very expensive repair costs.

Head gasket blew engine. This head gasket is a known problem on the Neon and Mitsubishi engines. There's an article in the March 1999 issue of motorservice magazine confirming the problem. Chrysler issued serviced bulletins, but no recall. It probably would have cost Chrysler $200-400 to replace the head gasket which would have avoided the $4000 bill for a new engine. My car could have been serviced one month prior while it was in the Dodge dealership for other repairs. Chyrsler did agree to pay for the parts and I paid for the labor $1400. I believe chyrsler should have paid for the entire cost since this is a known problem that they had not addressed. I did't expect to replace an engine on a 4 year old car.
