Bonneville with 37,000 miles. Numerous problems worst being upon attempting to make a right turn car keeps going straight then a clunk is heard from the front end of the car and the car finally goes right. This happened more than once. Dealer was also able to get the car to have the same problem. Dealer finds some type of metal lodged in between the links on the rack. Rack is replace under preferred warranty. Car has been in the shop 3 times in the past 14 days for a rear window seal leak, and is currently in the shop for a catalytic converter problem.

Steering very rough and bumpy turning both ways. Noticed in July,2001 fixed by dealer 8/20/2001 by replacing steering gear rack. Same problem back again in November 2001 at about 22,600 mi.

Don't recall exact dates or milage of failure, but steering rack was replaced twice by manufacture at about 13,000 and 20,000 miles. Both times experinced hard steering to left, abnormal sounds, and slight jerks transmitted through steering wheel during turning. Now have the exact same problem with my 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix which is having the steering rack replaced at a cost of about $1,000. On the Grand Prix bearings and other components actually fell out of the rack assembly on my driveway. The Grand Prix was purchased used about a year ago and currently has about 62,000 miles on it. I have never had to replace this component on any other vehicle I have owned. Is this a common problem for these vehicles?
