Try to start the car... runs for about 10 seconds and stops. I could hear the gas pump running after a couple times. I could smell the gas anyone got a solution thank you.

Hi, I have a Pontiac Grand AM GT, 2001 model, 2 door. I am having a lot of trouble starting my car (have to try several times sometimes). It is also completely dying on me while I'm driving with no warning. I lose all power and have to try to pull over quickly. The shop put a new fuel filter and fuel pump in and that didn't work. They put another new one in and thought it was good to go- that didn't work either! Still having these same 2 problems. Any ideas about what else it might be? P.S. It's NOT the battery. TL

Had to replace fuel pump. Just died out of no where and wouldn't run until pump was replaced. It would have been nice to at least have had a warning that it needed repairs especially this costly.

Ok, security light flashing on and off, evidently I'm told its the fuel pump, which I am not 100% sure that is in fact the problem, the car won't start at all, towed it home, would like to also mention the annoying clicking behind the dash, any ideas?

Second time in 5 years that I had to have the fuel pump replaced; had a friend fix real cheap, that made it feel a little better.

This is a fairly common problem with grand ams. I guess what makes it funny is that the only warning I got was when my speedometer dropped when I hit the gas on the interstate. Their I was with a dying car when I was suppose to be going 70 mph. When I finally stopped rolling( 300 feet from the gas station). I was lucky enough to be near an exit ramp. I went to the gas station and paid thirty dollars for a fricken gas can. My gas light had come on a mile before the car died so for some really stupid reason I thought that was the problem.

When that didn't work I had to get the car towed to a shop. The fuel pump alone was 307 dollars. Then when they put my car back together they didn't do it right. My heat shield it sitting on my exhaust system so now my car rattles. I think it's time for a new car. I'm going for a Toyota, Subaru, or Honda. I don't hear about numerous problems with them.
