NHTSA — Service Brakes Problems

2007 Saturn Aura (Page 2 of 4)

CarComplaints.com Seal Of This Might Hurt

CarComplaints.com Notes: The Saturn Aura was a mid-size car meant to replace the somewhat problematic L-Series. Unfortunately, the Aura brought its own problems: namely cheap brake parts that needed early replacement and a gear shifter that could say it’s in park while the transmission was still engaged.

Brake problems, including uneven wear and warped rotors that cause the car to wobble, are common complaints from 2007 owners. Did GM use metal for its rotors that can’t stand the heat? That’s what some say, and it’s hard to argue when reports show that rotors could start to warp as early as 500 miles off the dealer lot.

Meanwhile, a busted gear shifter cable lead to some unwanted rollaways. That’s because the shifter could say “Park” while the transmission was still in drive, reverse or neutral. A defect investigation into the issue was opened in 2011, eventually leading to a recall of 56,000 vehicles in 2014.

The first time I noticed my brake lights illuminated when I didn't have my foot on the brake was while driving on the garden state parkway. I was passing through the toll booth and began to accelerate when I noticed through my rearview mirror that my brake lights were on. I stepped on the break and the went off. I must say because feared it would be a costly fix I ignored it for a long time until I saw another Saturn Aura with the same issue. I drove behind the elderly woman until we both at a traffic light and I pulled along side her to inform her of what I saw. I also told her my car was doing the same thing. She thanked me for telling her a drove off. I took my car to a mechanic who told me he did believe it was a electrical problem but could be absolutely sure until he was able to keep the car for the day. Again not really in a position to fix what may be costly, I continued to drive. Finally I was stopped by another motorist and he explained that while driving behind me he noticed the brake lights came on but as we approached the traffic light which was red I slowed down( stepping on the brake) and the light went off until I was at a full stop and my foot was pressed firmly on the break then the break light come back on. As soon as I saw the recall I called my local GM dealer right away and told them what was happening with my brakes and the fact that when I try to move my gear out of park into drive I sometimes have to force it because it seems stuck.they said they would check to see if my car was included in the recall. Well what do you know its not. This I find very hard to believe, that my car would be doing almost exactly what was described in two recalls but my car(based on my VIN#) is not included. I believe GM is tying to minimize their responsibility for the repair of the cars they willing sold knowing they had issues.

I was on the interstate then I realized my car was slowing down. I pressed the accelerator and that's when I noticed the RPM passed three. I noticed both my front tires were smoking. I took it to the dealership and he told me he replaced the brakes and the caliper. A month later, it did the same thing. He then told me it need to be replaced again and I have to pay.

I found an article on-line regarding the ntsb investigating brake light problems with Chevy Malibu and Saturn Aura's. my 2007 Saturn Aura has the same issue. On occasions the brake light will be "reversed" the brake light will be on when the brake pedal is not pressed, then they will got off once the brake pedal is pressed. The most recent occurrence was on 5/26/14. I am aware of it happening another 6-7 times in the past couple of years.

Brake lights come on when foot is off the brake pedal. Brake lights will only turn off it pedal is tapped but brake lights will again come on a short time later 10 seconds +/- without foot on pedal. Also the cruise control will either not engage or will disengage on its own. The brake light problems is obviously dangerous. I've talked to several other people who have this same problem with the Aura, G6, Malibu build platform. Please issue a safety recall.

For the past few years- I have noticed that my brake lights will light up without me pressing on the brake. At times- the brake lights will not illuminate when I am pressing the brake. My dad has corrected this in the past with using diastolic lubrication on a connector under the passenger side dash board- which he found to do online. The local GM dealership wasn't able to help me nor was willing to research this for me. Generally my dad has been able to keep it corrected for 6 months at a time; now it wont make it past 2 weeks.

Brakes lights are reversed. Brake lights are on when my foot is off the brake pedal (when the car is parked, when I am accelerating/coasting). When I press on the brake pedal the lights go off. This issue is intermittent. When the issue is occuring the cruise control does not work and I also have to press the brake pedal all the way to the floor to put it in gear. I have had it in the shop on and off for years no one can seem to fix it. This is a safety issue, please recall.

Occurring often but intermittently, my brake lights remain on while the brakes are not being engaged. When the brake lights are engaged, the brake lights will turn off and will then come back on when disengaged. This also does not allow cruise control to be activated while the brake lights remain on. This issue has been reported by multiple Saturn Aura owners. The cause for concern is driver safety. Please take this issue into consideration as a recall for Saturn Aura owners.

First noticed cruise disengaged while driving and would not re-engage. Cruise corrected itself after trying it after several miles. Second, a few weeks later, cruise quit functioning again, this time I noticed the brake lights were on while not touching brake petal. When applying brake petal the brake lights go off, and then they will come on when the petal is released. Drove 60 miles this way in the dark. When I reached destination it was dawn light and car was running in park. The brake lights were off and running lights on. When I hit brake petal the brake lights would function as normal. I don't know if cruise was working since I was parked. Personal thought; could brake light issue only be related while the auto headlamps are functioning? my investigation led to many hundreds of complaints around the internet about all of the same problems happening at the same time on Saturn Aura, Chevy Malibu, and Pontiac G6. Ie brake lights operating in reverse of intended design, cruise control not working, and also transmission not shifting into or out of gear by the selector leaver. However, I am not noticing a shifter issue at this time. Huge safety hazard that the brake lights are functioning in reverse of normal design. However, all of the symptoms seem to be related and happening at the same time. I also found a technical bulletin no.: 08-05-22-009 with all of these related problems. Please finish investigation and move this to a recall!

Hard shifting from park to drive/reverse. Most of the time I have to press on the brakes really hard to get out of park and when I press on brakes it makes a scraping sound. Also while driving the center brake light comes on and will not go out until I press on the brake. When I press on the brake the brake light goes out and cars behind me almost run into me. This occurs often. I don't know if it happens during the day but it does at night because I can see the center brake light via my rear view mirror.

Three problems seem to have occurred around the same time: 1) the brake lights will illuminate when the brake pedal is not being depressed and will not illuminate when the brake pedal is being pressed; 2) the cruise control will not engage; and 3) sometimes the only way to get the gear selector out of park is to press down very hard on the brake pedal.

My brake lights just randomly comes on. It will come on when I press the gas and stay on while going down the road. It also goes off when I hit the brake sometimes. I have had it worked on and it still hasn't been fixed more than once. When this problem occurs it is hard to put my car in gear. The brake lights sometimes flicker randomly. I never really know when it will happen. The past two months the car has been in the shop for this problem at least twice if not more. This doesn't count the 6 times it had been looked at within the last year. The problem never seems to get fixed. The closest GM dealer is about an hour away as well.
