NHTSA — Power Train Problems

2007 Saturn Aura (Page 1 of 7)

CarComplaints.com Seal Of This Might Hurt

CarComplaints.com Notes: The Saturn Aura was a mid-size car meant to replace the somewhat problematic L-Series. Unfortunately, the Aura brought its own problems: namely cheap brake parts that needed early replacement and a gear shifter that could say it’s in park while the transmission was still engaged.

Brake problems, including uneven wear and warped rotors that cause the car to wobble, are common complaints from 2007 owners. Did GM use metal for its rotors that can’t stand the heat? That’s what some say, and it’s hard to argue when reports show that rotors could start to warp as early as 500 miles off the dealer lot.

Meanwhile, a busted gear shifter cable lead to some unwanted rollaways. That’s because the shifter could say “Park” while the transmission was still in drive, reverse or neutral. A defect investigation into the issue was opened in 2011, eventually leading to a recall of 56,000 vehicles in 2014.

On December 30, 2016, I started the vehicle and drove a half mile @ 25 mph to a stop sign, I pulled onto ritchie highway when the vehicle wouldn¿T shift out of second, the engine went to 4,000 RPM, and would not go over 35 mph. I pulled off onto the shoulder, and turned the engine off. After waited 15 minutes. I started the engine and the check engine lite was on. I than waited till I had no traffic, and returned home (1 miles away). The vehicle was sifting fine, but the check engine lite stayed on¿ on Dec.31, 2016, I drove the vehicle to the GM dealership and the vehicle still had the check engine light on, but now when shifting, it would shudder, would not down shift, and was also shuddering in reverse when I was parking the vehicle at the dealership... I'm told on Jan. 3, 2017, that it needs a control value, not covered by the recall # 14404, and that I would have to pay $2,150. The control value is contaminated by debris from the failed 3rd, 5th, and rev. Clutch plate / gears. Why is this not included in the recall? I've contacted GM (case # 8-2633465781) and they can't explain why.. please help. Ralph

The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Aura. The contact's VIN was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 14V252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control) and 14V224000 (power train). The contact did not receive a recall notification. The contact stated that the vehicle was unable to start and the gear selector had to be placed in neutral to get the key to turn over to start the vehicle. The vehicle also rolled out of position when the gear selector was placed in park, which caused the contact to apply the emergency brake to prevent a failure. The contact pulled the vehicle into a residential driveway in reverse and parked the vehicle. The vehicle rolled backwards into the contact's porch. It was determined that a gear cable piece fractured without warning. The mechanic indicated that there were two recalls on the vehicle that needed to be addressed with a dealer. The vehicle was unable to be driven. The dealer stated that the vehicle needed to be towed for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified. Parts distribution disconnect. Parts distribution disconnect. The failure mileage was not available.

I have a 2007 Saturn Aura xr 3.6L, the engine light came on, my mechanic diagnosed the codes as 1). Replace engine 2). Replace timing chain. Sunday, Jan 17th, 2016 my engine blew. There are 157,000 miles on this car and was extremely well cared for & have records to prove so. The timing chain broke causing the engine to blow. I loved that car....

This car has been a bust since the warranty expired. The transmission went out a year ago and was of course a recall for many other Auras except our specific one. Had that replaced, now its the timing chain, which is also a common complaint of the Aura yet there is no recall. The car misfires, shakes violently when in idle and when driving. It has a very hard shift. Its very hard to accelerate and the rpms shoot up. It also stalls and it sometimes just shuts off. Every light in the vehicle is on, check engine, stabilty, etc. It another expensive repair thats worth more than half the car.

While driving the car stopped and would only go into reverse. It had to be towed by pushing the car onto the tow truck. It had previously been fixed due to the transmission not staying in drive, this was from a previous recall.

I switched my gear form park to drive and my car started to roll backwards. I look down to make sure that I had it in drive and it was. I put it in park so I though and when I took my foot of the break my car continued to roll backwards. I then pushed down on the break and put in drive again and my car once again stared to roll backwards after taking my foot off the breaks.

'07 Aura xr. Purchased mid-January. Check engine light has been on since I bought it, with no issues other than an exhaust leak at the flex pipe. Started noticing loss of power on acceleration, attributed it to dirty injectors/bad fuel. Put in injector cleaner and premium fuel, car would not start. Finally started and took off only to have same issue, but now worse. Car would almost stall when accelerating from dead stop, have to keep accelerator pinned to the floor when starting, rough idle when running. Next step, replaced spark plugs. Did not fix problem, but still needed replacing. Checked codes: P0016 and P0017 (crankshaft position vs. Intake camshaft position correlation bank 1 fault). Have not taken to dealer to have assessed, but from everything I have read this is a stretched timing chain. Recall #11340C with special coverage for every other GM vehicle with the same problem, but not this one. What a joke. Would rather take the $2K-4K required for the repair and spend it on a competitor vehicle.

I was stopped one evening on my home from dinner when my car would not shift and had to make arrangements to get car to the dealership for the second costly repair...then six months later I received a special coverage letter in the mail. I had followed the process through the dealership for reimbursement and never so quickly got turned down due to the mileage at the time of repair. Prior to 2009, this transmission had issues caused by a very weak 3,5, R wave plate, which made this transmission prone to failure in GM products. Updated wave plates were released for many clutches in 6T70. The old design wave plates weren't stress relieved and could break with use. The updated wave plates are available. First course of action was a tsb number: Pip-4327A owners of 2007-2009 Saturn Aura and outlook, and 2008-2009 Saturn vue equipped with the 6T70/75 6-speed automatic transmission may experience no reverse and slip/flare/harsh shifts in 3rd and/or 5th gear. Codes P0776 clutch pressure control (pc) solenoid 2 stuck off and P0842 transmission fluid pressure 14404A – special coverage adjustment – transmission clutch wave plate I am requesting a recall due to having defective parts...knowingly and waiting until consumers/customers were over the mileage to get out of any type of reimbursement that is due to them. I have never been so disappointed with GM customer service and repeating the same answer back to me every time knowingly that my car repair was due to defective parts....I followed the steps and nothing...as if this is all made up. The incident date above was the replacement of the wave plate, piston and spring, reaction gear etc. I have spoke with lawanda at GM customer service many times and like I have told her I 'm not going away anytime soon. Sincerely, karla barnes

I reached back out to jack maxson (dealer) regarding the transmission cable failure and was assured by a gentleman @ the dealer that recall was already completed on my car. I was online looking up the issues noted below and apparently this is a more commonly known issue then I was aware of with the Saturn arua's, all of which I was advised being apart of the transmission shift cable matter. To better explain what is going on I hope this list helps you to understand, po these issues are sporadic. 1.shift from park to drive the power lock feature fails 2.shift form drive to park the power unlock feature fails 3.shift to reverse the reverse lights fail to come on 4.cruise control feature stops working (only when all the other feature above mentions stop) 5.shift to park the car rolls.

There is a service bulletin for this and many other cars tsb number: Pip-4327A that states GM is aware that there is a faulty wave plate in the transmission and that the plate will break at some point. When it does break it could cost the owner anywhere from $2500 to over $5,000 to get the transmission replaced/rebuilt. When the plate does break, the car is dangerous...the car slips into different gears and speeds which can be very dangerous. Please for GM to turn this into a recall and recall/replace these plates before someone is killed.

Driving North bound on 405 freeway in lane 1 (fast lane), orange county, California approximately 70 mph with flow of traffic at night on the way home from work. The car jerked suddenly, quickly started to lose speed; unable to regain speed with pedal - caused additional, intense jerking. Concurrently, other motorists began honking and swerving around as the car continued to decrease speed. Signaled for lane change & began to merge right (across 5 lanes), turned on hazard flashers after merge into far right lane. Car could go no faster than 35-39 mph range. Exited freeway. Reverse gear no longer functional. Visit to GM dealer next day, advised of widespread, known design defect to clutch wave plate on 2007-2009 GM cars with 6-speed automatic transmission. Wave plate heats up, disintegrates, and remnants shred into the transmission gears that - when occurring while car is moving, as it was in our case - will cause potential loss-of-control incidents similar to ours. Have since been informed that the wave plate design defect exists in all 3.6L V6 - 6-speed automatic transmission equipped models of Chevrolet Malibu 2008-2009, Chevrolet equinox 2007-2009, GMC acadia 2007-2009, Saturn Aura 2007-2009, Saturn vue 2007-2009, and Saturn outlook 2007-2009. The wave plate component was redesigned by GM in 2009, but GM did not as has not recalled any of these models for this condition. Even more concerning, in spite of numerous incidents reported on the NHTSA website and all over the internet (just google "GM wave plate" - it's now so prolific, that it automatically pops up as a search suggestion), NHTSA has yet to even open an investigation. This dangerous, potentially deadly defect exists and will likely fail - it's not a matter of "if, " it's a matter of "when" - on all of the aforementioned models produced. Please, NHTSA, open this as an investigation.
