NHTSA — Engine And Engine Cooling Problems

CarComplaints.com Seal Of This Might Hurt

CarComplaints.com Notes: The Saturn Aura was a mid-size car meant to replace the somewhat problematic L-Series. Unfortunately, the Aura brought its own problems: namely cheap brake parts that needed early replacement and a gear shifter that could say it’s in park while the transmission was still engaged.

Brake problems, including uneven wear and warped rotors that cause the car to wobble, are common complaints from 2007 owners. Did GM use metal for its rotors that can’t stand the heat? That’s what some say, and it’s hard to argue when reports show that rotors could start to warp as early as 500 miles off the dealer lot.

Meanwhile, a busted gear shifter cable lead to some unwanted rollaways. That’s because the shifter could say “Park” while the transmission was still in drive, reverse or neutral. A defect investigation into the issue was opened in 2011, eventually leading to a recall of 56,000 vehicles in 2014.

The gear shift would not go into to park, neutral, or reverse, the gear shift to the transmission broke. The steering column fluid is leaking, the front head light went out. The head gasket is wearing out, the car is rusting already on the body. The air conditioning fan is not blowing out cool air or heat. "the transmission feels like it slipping sometimes. I feel so betrayed to have been sold a car that needs so much work when all I wanted was a dependable car to get me to my part time job. I would be bopping along on the highway, then all of a sudden, the check engine and reduced eng pwr messages appeared on the driver information console. On my way home from work the other day after the rain storm, I was driving on I-95 and all of the a sudden received several error messages in the dic: -service traction -eng pwr reduced the check engine and tc-disabled indicators remained lit. So I limped the rest of the way home on what felt like two-cylinders. After reading some info on the web I fond out that water could be coming in from some place and is affecting the throttle control module (part no. 15780668). I think this is another issue that GM need to look into because it can make the car just stop on the highway.

My check engine light came on in my 2007 Saturn Aura xr. I had the codes checked out and was told that the cam sensors were bad. I had them replaced with the crankcase position sensor. After replacement the check engine light came on again and remains. I had the vehicle checked again and was told that the "timing chain was stretched and would need replacement. My mechanic suggested that I get rid of the car because of the cost of repair. This occurred just after my powertrain warranty was up. Is there any recourse with General Motors regarding the repair costs of my vehicle. It appears to me that GM has known about this problem for sometime even though my vehicle didn't have any problems until last month. Thank you for any information that you may be able to give me. Saturn Aura has already been in the shop almost 30 days in the past year. It has 32,000 miles on it and now they are telling me I need new back brake pads and the rotors turned. It makes a horrible highpitched screeching noise when you hit the brakes, when you turn, and sometimes when you are just going down the road.

Purchased 2007 Saturn Aura in July of 2008. Immediately had problems with the brakes and steering wheel. The following problems included; the car not starting up twice in the dead of winter resulting in it being towed once and jumped once, the brakes squeak unbelievably loud and the steering wheel shakes, the engine stalls when applying more pressure on the gas pedal, the motor in the driver's seat blew out, the alarm remote will lock the doors when it feels like it, when put in the parking gear the car continued to roll forward when my foot was released off of the brake pedal resulting in the car being towed, when put in park on a slight decline the car would not reverse but only rolled forward. This resulted in the car being towed again. Each time the car was towed I was given a rental and had to pay for the gas which was an extra expense I should not have had to deal with. The power outlet for cell phone chargers did not work shortly after purchasing the car. When the car was towed because it would not start up, the dealership told me that they "could not duplicate the stalling." This was the result each time. However, a shifter cable was replaced, but did not help as the same problem occurred with the car not going into reverse. Also when the car was towed because it would not reverse or park, they said "could not duplicate."

My 2007 Saturn Aura had been into the dealership approx. 1.5 weeks ago because the vehicle was having difficulty accelerating. The engine would rev but the car wouldn't move. The dealership said there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. On the night of September 20, 2007, at approximately 8:30 pm, while driving the car in a residential neighborhood, I tried to apply the brakes at a stop sign. The ABS light came on, the pedal went to the floor, and the car revved, surged forward through an intersection and struck another vehicle. My car hit car #2 with such force that it caused car #2's wheel axle to snap in half and severe damage to car #2's front passenger side fender and door that the car needed to be towed away. I was taken away in an ambulance. Onstar confirmed two codes at the time of the accident: #1--ABS/traction control system malfunction and #2--take the car to a service center as it may exhibit abnormal behavior when driving and/or stopping. This Saturn Aura has been nothing but problems since getting it in October 2006. It has just over 14,000 miles on it and has been serviced for the aforementioned issue plus replacing a broken engine mount, replacing a leaking engine gasket, resurfacing the brake rotors at 7,000 miles, multiple repairs to a non-functioning onstar system, and consistent issues with the warning light on the tire inflation monitor (I eventually had the tires filled with nitrogen). This car is a hazard. Because of the service history of the vehicle, I have obtained legal counsel. The Saturn will be evaluated by an independent mechanic to determine what needs to be repaired. I am scared to drive this car again.

In October 2006, my husband and I purchased a new 2007 Saturn Aura. In December 2006, we received a recall notice from the Saturn of greenville, nc dealership. Modification # 06147. On 12/29/06 I took the car to the dealership to have the car serviced for the recall. As explained to me the recall had to do something with the power steering. On February 21, 2007, I had an upsetting event occur with my new Aura. I drove approximately three miles from my home to a child care center to drop off my one-year old son. I continued my drive to work approximately 2.5 miles. As I approached my place of employment, I noticed some smoke and immediately thereafter lost my power steering. I struggled with the steering until I reached our parking lot and then I ran from the car in panic. Immediately upon leaving the vehicle, the engine erupted into a fiery blaze. My co-workers witnessed the fire in disbelief and assisted me with contacting the fire department. The fire consumed the front end of my vehicle and it was declared a total loss. The car only had approximately 5800 miles. After contacting Saturn corporate, the so called 'recall' above was actually only a service bulletin. Even though the notice we received in the mail had stated on it, urgent/recall notice. Since the fire, GM has re-purchased the automobile and has refunded our money. We do not know the cause of the engine fire nor do we know if the fire was related to the service bulletin we had the car serviced for in December 2006.
