2007 Saturn Aura (Page 2 of 2)

CarComplaints.com Seal Of This Might Hurt

CarComplaints.com Notes: The Saturn Aura was a mid-size car meant to replace the somewhat problematic L-Series. Unfortunately, the Aura brought its own problems: namely cheap brake parts that needed early replacement and a gear shifter that could say it’s in park while the transmission was still engaged.

Brake problems, including uneven wear and warped rotors that cause the car to wobble, are common complaints from 2007 owners. Did GM use metal for its rotors that can’t stand the heat? That’s what some say, and it’s hard to argue when reports show that rotors could start to warp as early as 500 miles off the dealer lot.

Meanwhile, a busted gear shifter cable lead to some unwanted rollaways. That’s because the shifter could say “Park” while the transmission was still in drive, reverse or neutral. A defect investigation into the issue was opened in 2011, eventually leading to a recall of 56,000 vehicles in 2014.

The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Aura. The contact stated that a strong odor of gasoline was coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician diagnosed that the fuel pump lid was leaking. The pump module was replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. I recently notice the smell of gasoline emanating from my vehicle. I initially checked the function and fit of gas cap. I removed to engine cover and started the vehicle to inspect fuel lines in the engine bay area as well as the area of and the fuel delivery system itself to the manifold. All the above inspections produced no visible signs of fuel leakage. I lifted the vehicle to inspect the fuel system from the firewall area to the fuel tank. Again, no obvious signs of leakage. At the fuel tank the smell was more intense but still nothing obvious. Due to the position of the fuel tank, inspection of the top half was not possible with my tool availability. Yet the intensity of the smell in the fuel tank area gave a strong indication of a leak at the tank. Upon a search online for possible solutions, I found that the 2007 Saturn ion has a fuel pump recall for exactly this issue and it specifies Arizona as an impact state. I truly believe my Aura is experiencing the same troubles associated with the fuel pump issue of the ion. I have made an appointment to have the issue diagnosed at my local dealership. While searching online I found several posting by other Aura owners who have experienced this same problem. Of those who paid for resolution, all found the leak stemmed from a cracked plastic fitting at the fuel pump. The reason behind the ion recall. Something needs to be done to expand the recall to other GM vehicles before a dangerous issue arises and someone is injured. I can't afford to fix my vehicle at this time yet I must travel daily to and from work. I pray that either I can afford resolution myself, or the NHTSA finds resolve for Aura owners before someone gets hurt or a vehicle receives major damage due to this fuel leak problem.

Sometime in November I started experiencing an extended crank where it took my car a few seconds longer to start up. By December this was still happening but now I was starting to smell gasoline in and around my vehicle. A friend of mine was a mechanic for Saturn for 17 years and now works for another dealer. He checked the car and determined this was a problem in the fuel line. Further investigation revealed that this issue matches a recall issue for the 2007 Saturn ion. I contacted GM at 800-521-7300 to ask if there were any recalls for the Aura for this issue that is identical to the ion recall and was told there are no recalls for my vehicle. This issue seems like it should warrant a recall as this is a safety issue and poses the same risk for fire. My vehicle has less than 50, 000 miles on it. I don't want to risk a vehicle fire while fighting to get a recall issued so I will end up paying out of pocket to fix this defect.
