After selecting reverse, it takes up to 5 seconds for it to recognize and shift.

My wife generally drives this Smart and has told me that from time to time it would not engage in reverse. This weekend we drove from DC to NYC. We pulled into a parking garage, stopped to get the check-in ticket. The car would not engage in either forward or reverse. I got out and pushed the car out of the way. When I got back in the transmission started working again.
Does anyone know of a true fix for this?

Won't engage in to reverse. Can turn off then back on & will engage. Drive started doing it too took to Creve Cour Missouri to fix. Told clutch cost of $750 just for part. Then called back stated another $450 part needed. Got home didn't engage into reverse. Stopped payment because dealership has not called me back, been 3 working days.

It happens usually when the car is hot. Sometimes it get so worse that if I shut off the car the car doesn’t start again until the engine get cold again.
