When an engine stall occurs, this car requires a full reset before a restart can be performed. This is very dangerous when said reset happens while the car is moving. Meaning ' a full reset means the ignition key must first be fully turned off. When the car is in motion and the key is fully turned off, at that time the locking gear in the ignition switch engages and locks the steering wheel... while the car is in motion!!! this is a common occurrence in the manual shift transmission models.

The vehicle was valet parked. The valet attendant reported that the vehicle shut down as she was driving it up the ramp out of the parking garage. She also reported a knocking sound and that the "check engine" light was on. Upon entering the vehicle, I was unable to start it. I had the vehicle towed to the VW dealership. They told me that the high pressure fuel pump had failed and that they had seen other cars coming in with this same problem. Service department paperwork states: "defective high pressure pump-metal in system" and "found fault P0191." Vehicle speed at time of incident is estimated based on valet attendant's description.

On Friday Jan. 11, 2013, the vehicle (2010 VW Jetta tdi) in question was traveling on an expressway at a speed of approximately 50 mph when suddenly the glow plug light and check engine warnings turned on the vehicle display and shortly afterwards the engine stalled. The vehicle stalled in the middle of the road but no accident occurred because there was no other traffic at the time of failure. Attempts to start the engine failed.vehicle had to be pushed to the side of the road. Vehicle was towed to service location to be diagnosed and results were indicative that the fuel pump failed catastrophically rendering the vehicle inoperable. Excessive metal shards were evident on the fuel filter. Vehicle has not yet been repaired pending a response from the manufacturer. Same vehicle stalled in traffic after bought new at approximately 8000 miles on the odometer in 2010 but engine was able to be restarted. Volkswagen dealership service department performed diagnostic for the 1st stalling incident and said there was nothing wrong. No service was performed to check fuel system at that time.

The car abruptly decelerated from 65 to 35 mph on a major interstate as the engine went into 'limp mode'. the sudden deceleration caused swerving and I had to pull over to the curb in order to avoid an accident. The coil/check engine light turned on and car hesitated as it drove. This is the third incident that this car has had with the exhaust problem causing engine to force deceleration and abrupt stopping even stalling. The system this time diagnosed a defective exhaust control module/flap. The previous emissions issue while the car was under warranty involved defective egr valves. Problem seems to show up every 10-15K miles on this diesel model.

Happened last night, with my 6 yr old daughter in the car, and wife driving on the freeway! check engine light, and fuel injector/glow plug light blinking, car shutdown, but fortunately was able to pull off to the side but still next to freeway on/off ramp. Car would crank over but not start. Called aaa tow to VW dealer where the car was purchased. I drove the car earlier that morning on a fairly long trip (over 100 miles), and started noticing the fuel economy wasn't as good as I normally would get (40 mpg), but it was raining heavy that morning so that's what I attributed it to, but only seeing 30 mpg after all freeway driving was suspicious to me. VW dealer said the high pressure fuel pump failed and contaminated the entire diesel fuel system and all the parts will need to be replaced and fuel system cleaned out.

My 2010 VW Jetta sportwagen got the glow plug light intermittent flash starting on 72K miles. In the cold morning I could drive 10-15 minutes without issue. However, once the glow plug is on, it could not exceed 40mph. Here's the diagnostic from the dealership: 72017 confirm mile on, glow plug light intermittent flash. Perform guided fault finding, faults tored P00af. Turbocharger boost performance visual inspection found vacuum hoses good. Following test plan, check N75 solenoid good. Check wiring to G581 ref volt good. Perform gff function test vacuum diaphram good. Function test N75 good. Vacuum at 9psi. Check internal resistance at boost actuator position sensor out of spec. Glow plug light came lit on dash and said "service engine immediately." Engine then lost power on interstate (dangerous). When re-cranked, engine was sluggish and would not accelerate above 40mph. VW service said it was due to a faulty fuel pump.

While driving 65 mph on the freeway in oakland, ca, the engine malfunction light came on, my car began to slow down, and as soon as I exited the freeway the car stalled and stopped altogether, and would not restart. I was towed to the oakland VW dealership. They informed me that the fuel pump had failed, and had to replace the fuel pump, filter, fuel lines, etc. The dealer said that there were shards of metal throughout the fuel lines. This appears related to NHTSA engineering analysis EA11-003.

While driving on the highway with cruise control engaged at/around speed limit, I noticed the rpms jumping and could feel the car jerking, as if some kind of acceleration/deceleration was happening. I also notice rpms jump 50 up/down while idling. This seems to happen when driving down hills on cruise control, more prevalent in colder weather. No loss of control has occurred, but appears to be issue that is slowly worsening.

High pressure fuel pump failed traveling 60mph, car begins to stumble (more often then every hundred miles-now less than every 5 miles), engine almost dies out multiple times, RPM drops to near zero, check engine light turns on, hundreds of MINImetal flakes found in fuel system/fuel canister. Car driven to dealer (showed picture of metal in fuel canister). Hamilton imports (VW dealer) had initial tech on 081412 diagnosis problem as "normal for diesel fuel." Called 081512 to service manager john, left message, he replied stating metal in fuel is "normal." On 081612 email VW of America, in regards to the problem, call from service adviser on 081712 and are looking further into the problem. Later that day, called service adviser, they ordered a complete fuel system and apologized for the initial delay and not fixing the car correctly. Received a call from the dealer, 082812, the car is ready for pickup. A complete new fuel system was installed (injectors, high pressure fuel pump(failed), fuel rail, electric fuel pump in tank, all piping).

2009-2013 model year Volkswagen tdi vehicles sold in the United States contain an exhaust restrictor valve that controls the regenerative feature of the diesel particulate filter (dpf). This flap is experiencing abnormal failure rate between 25000 and 70000 miles. Volkswagen is denying claims to replace these exhaust restrictor valves when they fail, and is asking customers to pay for replacement. Long-term malfunction of this valve results in non-compliance. The valve design has been updated several times, indicating that a defect was present in the original design. Reference: forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?T=275066.

When I started my car, a 2010 Jetta sedan tdi, it started making a strange noise, but still ran. I tried to drive it over to the Volkswagen dealer which was approximately 2 miles away. I pulled out onto the highway and achieved a speed of approximately 30mph. The car continued to make the noise and began to lose power within a half mile. I pulled into the parking lot of a shopping center at which time the engine died and would not restart. The car had to be towed to the Volkswagen dealer, wallace imports of johnson city, tn. It took them approximately 1 1/2 weeks to get the parts in and repair the vehicle. The service representative explained to my husband that there was a catastrophic failure of the high pressure fuel pump, which resulted in metal fragments contaminating the entire fuel system. As a result, he was told that every part which came in contact with the fuel had to be replaced, including the fuel tank, fuel lines, filters, fuel injectors, and many others. There was a two page list of the parts used to fix my car. My concern is that this could happen again resulting in an unsafe situation. Further, we also have 2010 Jetta tdi sportswagen and have concerns of the same problem occurring at highway speeds since my husband routinely make round trips of 230 miles at least twice a week traveling mainly on the interstate.

I purchased my brand new VW Jetta from the dealership lot. Less than 4 weeks later when the car was in the driveway I started it, and as I pressed the gas down the car began to move (in a sputtering/jerking type of movemen)T but it was not able to go more than 7 feet before it stalled out, , and the RPM's were high and the car just moved like it was not able to properly accelerate, it stalled out before the end of my drive way. I started it again and it drove properly, this exact incident occurred at least1- 2 times a week on a cold start. I took it to dealership, nothing found on diagnostics.then at least every 1-2 months I took it to dealership, no proof on diagnostics.next a recall & work was done. Same problem occurred again and again. Took it back. They said they could not find a solution because its not repeating the stalling when its at dealership. I am still having the issue of my car stalling out when driving, it is a safety issue. It is dangerous driving a car that stalls out while you are on the road. Since the cold start issues I have also had it stall out on the road, in an intersection. This car is still repeating the stalling. I cannot get any answers on how to fix it due to no "proof" on diagnostics check. I feel unsafe in my car. It starts to accelerate then shuts off. This is not acceptable and hasnt ever been properly fixed even thoughvw corporate has a case on the issues of my car.

I'm was driving up hills with 38 mph notice that glow plug light flashing the car lost all power almost instantly. Fortunately I was able to managed the car to emergency lane. Lucky that I'm not on the freeway and I didn't have my 6 years old son with me at that time. This is a safety issue that we need to address to vwgoa so they can do a recall. You can find 100 or more same failures at www.tdiclub.com, some of the member had to replaced the hpfp twice. Dealer found hpfp failures. Metal found in the fuel pump due to hpfp self-destruction. Repaired and paid for by VW. Replaced the whole fuel system, tank, 3 fuel pumps, all lines and hoses.
