Purchased a used 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI in April 2014. Traded in a 1998 suburban with 300,000 miles because we were driving to Denver twice a week. Over the last year, drove it to Phoenix, Arizona, Wichita, Kansas, and all over Colorado, running great and was getting 41 mpg. Put new tires on it and kept up with the oil changes. In May 2015, our daughter was driving it to college for a basketball camp and while she was going up a pass, it just quit running. In our tiny rural area, finally found a mechanic (with European experience...Bob) who had the skills to look at it. Bob's diagnosis: the turbo blew and threw shrapnel through the system and is now saying we need to replace the entire engine. We are still paying for the car and can't afford a new engine. Even a used rebuilt engine will be very pricey. As other's attest, Bob is gifted and he says he really doesn't want to do it because it would cost us so much money and we still owe on it! He says he feels bad for us! (a mechanic with empathy!) He also says he did some research and the VW Jettas have lots of issues. Wish we would have talked to him before we bought this car; however, we did not meet him until we had a need like this. Our regular mechanic has always kept up our vehicles because they were American, but he refuses to work on this one. The story gets worse and I don't want to relive all of my bad karma with vehicles, but my other vehicle a (2006 Jeep Libery CRD) hasn't been running for 18 months. (No mechanic wants to work on it either.) Only one running, the 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan I paid cash for 6 years ago!!!!
