My 2010 VW Jetta has a DSG transmission. VW Dealer said I would need a new unit and that it would be imported from Germany and installed at a cost of $USD 5600. I asked for a second hand one, after all, there are parking lots full of Audis and Jettas in Victorville, California. The service agents response; "Why would you inherit someone else problems?"

To cut a long story short. I had a local Transmission shop (Mountain Transmission, Kelowna, B.C) investigate. The transmission was perfect. The Mechatronic unit (brains) was replaced. The Technician did not have to take it to VW for coding. HE FIGURED IT OUT HIMSELF. The overall cost was palatable. Thanks to Tom and Cam from Mountain transmission.

My comment is, there is no longer a seek and find problem at VW dealerships, only allotted time to remove and replace. Save the landfills!

Jetta Wolfsburg 2.0L Turbo I-4

  • Automatic transmission

My girlfriend was driving the car and several times over the course of a few months, the DSG transmission would just downshift for no apparent reason and engine would rev to 4000-4500 RPM for about 10 seconds. I was never able to replicate the problem personally as it's a 2nd vehicle, but she said it happened about 3-4 different times on different occasions at all different speeds. The first time she was driving through town at about 25mph. Apparently the car did not accelerate violently when this happened, it just shifted out of the correct gear all by itself and revved to 4000+ RPM. The 2nd time it happened she had the cruise set at 55-60mph when it did it. I researched it and thought it might be a "false neutral" condition, but it seems that is always accompanied with a flashing gear indicator, which she swears she never saw. Very odd. I never had it fixed yet because we've since bought a different vehicle so we don't drive the Jetta much.
