bent wheel, normal roads, wheel material too soft

On two separate occasions I have hit pot holes (ordinary road conditions) in the road at moderate speed resulting in the aluminum, wheels incurring substantial bending and going out of round. I have been driving for more that 44 years and have never experienced bending of wheels on any vehicle. The wheel design appears to give very little resistance to bending when confronted with ordinary road conditions. As I was having the second wheel change at a VW dealership (at almost twice the cost of a major tire dealer) I was informed of a third wheel that is also damaged.
