This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
All electrical power has been shut off to vehicle on 4 different occassions. The first time was while entering a right turn lane at a slow speed. All power equipment failed...no power brakes, no power steering, etc. I was able to restart the engine without difficulty after turning the ignition off (with the transmission in neutral) and starting in a normal fashion. This failure mode and resolution is typical. The second time, I was turning left across a fairly busy intersection. Fortunately, I had enough momentum to continue without being hit by oncoming traffic. The third time was in an enclosed parking lot as I made a slow right turn to go up a ramp. The fourth time, and this one was unusual, I was travelling about 45 mph when all the failure lights came on for about 1 sec. Fortunately, the power came on by itself. Imagine the consequences of a total electrical failure at 40+ mph in traffic...no power to the brakes or steering.
Engine and car completely shut down on 2 occasions (4/13/01 and 7/27/01). Mass air flow sensor replaced initial instance and software updaed. Ignition nd fuel injection fault tracing. Unable to isolate cause second instance. Intermittent communication fault at electronic throttle module. Unable to duplicate problem. Refuse pick-up of the car at royal Volvo since very concerned about safety issues. Have notified Volvo customer services twice, Volvo dealership, NHTSA, office of attorney general. Thorough letter being sent to NHTSA, center for auto safety, and office of attorney general on 8/6/01. Please thoroughly review the content. Major concerns----have found at least 6 other instances of the same problem. Will send all documentation in the express letter being sent. Call if any questions and leave an 800 number for responses. Urge you to please take note....this issue is broader than my own.
