The vehicle sporadically surge/hesitate and stalls at low revs. This started maybe about half a year ago and has gotten worse with the problems even at high revs. The problem culminated on May 17th 2009 or there about when I nearly got into an accident. I was traveling on the middle at about 60 mph and there was a slower vehicle in front of me. I accelerated to try to pass the vehicle on the fast lane. The vehicle did pick up and all of a sudden went on a limp mode even I stepped on the accelerator. My vehicle was almost just side by side to the slower vehicle when this happened. The next thing I heard was a loud continuous horning and screeching of brakes of a car behind me on the fast lane.. the vehicle is well maintained and perform service well above as what manufacturer recommended. Based on various info. Sources, the problem is almost identical to car that has an electronic throttle module problem.

Over the course of ownership of a 2000 Volvo S80 (I.e., four years), I have the transmission overhauled at 67,000 miles;had the throttle replaced when my car choked ( luckily on a side street); had a bar on the sunroof drop off; engine mounts broken; wheel stops broken; and, most recently replaced an ABS panel. Not withstanding in any of these incidents is the cooling fan and ball joint replaced due to recall. Truly this car has been more expensive than any other known to be driven. Every trip to the dealership is easily $1000 plus. At the time of purchase, the research was scant in terms of problems. I have truly been dismayed by Volvo's commitment to its product and is design flaws and/or defects. After, the transmission was corrected at the dealership, I went to trade the car in---to purchase another car. The dealership where I purchased the car basically would not give money on its trade. After several thousand dollars later in repairs, I am still fuming over a car that was purchased solely for the "historical" Volvo standard and its commitment to safety.

Continuous air bag warning light. Car dies on road. Get fixed, then air bag light comes on again. Ran into a person who Volvo airbags deployed without reason and she was injured. After exiting highway, car "died." I am lucky to be alive as the wheel stiffened up & I had to rely on the parking brake to slow down. Had to get a "jump start" to get home. Car is unsafe. Returned to Volvo. Also had steering wheel that shakes at higway speeds, alarm that went off while driving, & wouldn't start, remote door opener doesn't always work, service engine light flickered on & off -- said it was an emissions problem.

Air intake tube protrudes below the bottom of the engine and comes in contact with high spot in the road. Leads to abrasion and failure of drive belt with subsequent destruction of the timing belt and catastrophic failure of the engine. Loss of engine power under numerous driving conditions could easily lead to a fatal accident. Volvo refuses to acknowledge the problem, rectify it or reimburse customers. Volvo has redesigned on later models without admission of guilt.
