OIL level keep going down. Needs to add more oil every 400-500 miles, I need to add quart of engine oil.

I have had the light go on that say stop driving the car in August. When it was taken to my mechanic, it was totally out of oil after have a synthetic oil change 2 weeks prior. It occurred again in September. Even after adding oil I need to add more each week! I can't afford this car. I am a 70 years old woman and I am terrified of getting stuck on the road with this car.

I have driven Volvos for the past 30 years and this is the first time I have a such a bad problem that needs to be constantly monitored. It will be the last Volvo I own if it is not recalled and fixed.
