I have a 1999 Dodge Durango and I was on the highway driving 60 mph, out of nowhere the vehicle just shuts down and a semi truck was an inch from striking my vehicle from behind. The semi left skid marks that where 25 feet long. I have replaced the PCM, crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor and the ignition coil and still no fix. This is my only car and I have to get to work everyday, I have no other means of transportation and I cant afford another car. I feel that my life is in jeopardy every time I drive this car. I have been in several near misses such as this one. Does someone have to die before a solution is found?

About a month after buying my 5.9 slt Durango I was driving on the highway at about 75mph and the engine stalled and I lost power steering as well as power brakes and the odometer read no bus. After about 10 minutes it turned back on and drove just fine the rest of the day. It was about 90 degrees out at then time of the failure. We took it to several shops and finally found out the problem (PCM/ main computer) and we were shocked that there was not a recall after hearing how often this occurred. $1200 dollars later it runs amazing. The problem did get progressively worse before we were able to get it to the dealership to fixit. The longest we had to wait was 45 minutes between stall and start up. We also installed a K&N cold air intake system that has a heat shield around the computer. I love Dodge and am sad they have not yet made a recall on this potentially deadly problem.

We experienced within 1 week of purchase (March 2011) the frequent stalling out, along with total loss of power brakes and power steering that has been reported by hundreds of 1999 owners. The problem occurs in primarily hot summer weather, but has also occurred in spring and fall weather with any temps over 70 degrees, although less frequently.the actions required are to raise the hood, wait for the unit to cool (or cool it artificially with cold water or ice pack) until the vehicle will restart. Over a year period of experimenting, I have lessened but not cured the problem. All the solutions are related to increasing the airflow to the cpu/PCM area, which chronically overheats due to its location. If Dodge would recall the 1999 model, I can imagine either of two solutions at minimal cost. (photos of my solutions are available.) if the air guard to the passenger side of the radiator has the top half removed, then it is simple to install an intake tube or shaft to direct air thru the grille to the PCM. A plastic, easy installed unit would be the lowest cost solution. Failing this, the relocation of the PCM with a mounting bracket kit and a harness extension would allow placement of the unit in a cooler location (like right behind the new grille opening). My wife loses all braking and steering power assist when the engine stalls, sometimes when turning across oncoming traffic. This is a severe safety issue. It has occurred at least twice a week in hot weather for a year now, and on May 28th, 2012, it occurred 6 times within 40 miles during a 120 mile trip.

Vehicle dies at stop light. I push it to the side of the road to investigate. Vehicle engine cranks but doesn't fire. On odometer display it says no bus. Fuel pump not coming on when ignition is turned on. I walk to parts store and buy fuel pump relay, or circuit breaker. Put it in, fuel pump comes on engine starts. Wife is driving it two days later. Vehicle dies in busy intersection. Nice people push her off the road way. She calls me, I tell her to take circuit breaker to parts store and get new one. She replaces breaker, she's on the road again. So now I do some reading find out circuit breakers just get hot stop working, cool down and work again. So some thing is drawing too much current. Replace the fuel pump and filter, big pain in the you know what. Vehicle dies two days later. Nice man pulls me off the road. I leave vehicle sit for an hour. Vehicle starts back up. So I just go on vehicle dies on me all the time. Fast food lines, busy intersections, it dies every where, every temp. I don't let mommy drive it anymore. I don't trust it to carry my baby anymore. I cant sell it. I have read about people having same exact problems. They say replace fuel pump, did it. Replace computer, did that. Several years ago dealer ship put new computer in cost me $1200. All for a problem similar to this one. Vehicle died at stop lights, but started up right away. I have replaced so many parts, every thing is new. I cant trust it. Its very unsafe. I cant knowingly sell it to some body. Thanks Dodge.

When driving at highway speeds the engine will suddenly shut off losing power steering and brakes. After sitting for 10 to 30 minutes it will restart and run for an additional distance until shutting off and repeating the same symptoms again. It will sometimes perform normally for days until once again quitting for no reason. Multiple components have been replaced without correcting the problem. Dodge denies there being any problems with the vehicle but there are many instances of the same condition being reported on internet sites from around the country.

This has happened on numerous occasions. While driving, especially in extremely hot or extremely cool situations, the vehicle engine shuts down unexpectedly. First symptom - check engine light. Second symptom (3 seconds later) - fuel gauge from half full to empty. Third symptom (immediate) - low fuel warning light. Fourth symptom (2 seconds later) - low fuel warning light. Fifth symptom - engine shut down at highway speed. Completely lost vehicle control. No power steering, no power brakes. Muscled car to the side of the road and barely avoided an accident. Could have been easily killed. Problem appears PCM-related, but from what I've read, numerous people have paid $1,000 for a new PCM only to have the same results. This is a serious problem and has been reported thousands of times on the internet. I hope somebody does something with Dodge on this before a child is killed when the truck dies at highway speed.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test but did not generate any failure codes. The dealer replaced the ECM, PCM, crank sensor and the fuel pump. The failure seemed to be corrected however, the vehicle began to stall two months after the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure who informed the contact to file a complaint. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 205,000.

The contact stated that the mechanic advised that the computers were failing. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for further inspection or repairs. The failure mileage was 147,000 and current mileage was 155,000.

Have replaced the idle air control valve, cam and crankshaft sensors, computer control relay fuel pump relay and the cap and rotor along with the distrubutor. Still stalls mostley in the afternoons temputre makes no differience. Last time stalled in busy intersection almost got hit by a speeding car.

1) events leading up to the failure? none. Engine failure occurs without warning. 2) the engine failure occurs totally randomly, with no perceivable indication prior. It has happened at stop signs, in parking lots, and on roadways. Were this to happen on a highway or a bridge or a steep hill, the outcome could very easily be fatal! 3) failure does not get recorded by onboard computer; hence, mechanic is unable to troubleshoot the error and fix it. To date, I have read that the car's PCM (power control module) is at fault.

Causing early failure & possible accident; 5) ABS & brake dash warning light illuminates due to faulty sensors located on transmission tunnel & near drive shaft; 6) front brake rotors undersized for gvw causing premature brake failure / replacement & possible accident. Vehicle has been maintained w/ all scheduled factory services & oil changes.

1999 Dodge Durango - engine stalls during driving, relates to computer overheating. I had the computer replaced but the problem returns. Vehicle very difficult to stop or turn D/T power loss. Last occurred in oncoming traffic lane while turning. Computer returns no codes but odometer displays no bus. Engine compartment is way too hot for this component so I do not expect anything to work except re-routing the wiring and mounting the computer outside the engine compartment. I have tried improved air flow and insulation but it simply gets too hot. I cannot stress the level of risk this problem presents. Had this occurred while I was pulling a trailer over one of my usual camping routes I would not be reporting this nor would anyone else in the vehicle because losing the engine on a canyon edge would make the vehicle impossible to stop. I refuse to drive the vehicle as this has now happened even on quick trips on slow flat roads. This failure has occurred 5 times now and is predictable. Hot weather, 5-15 minutes of driving, all components hot in engine compartment, let it all cool down and vehicle can re-start. Odometer blinks 4 times and returns no bus fault. Computer will not return a code and so is not covered under its warranty for replacement. This is not a question of if but when a class 1 mishap will occur.

I currently own a 1999 Dodge Durango. This vehicle has been an extreme safety hazard. In the last month I have noticed that my vehicle shuts off without warning while I am still driving, on the freeway, or on a main street. Two times that this has happen I had my small children in the car with me on the freeway. I was unable to turn my car back on, and it was almost impossible to get my car pulled over to a safe place. I have taken my car in several times for a diagnostic and the problem for some reason undetectable. I realize now that this has been an issue for many people who own this year and model Durango. I really think that this needs to be looked into a little further because someone eventually may get hurt because of the negligence from the Durango distributors.
