CarComplaints.com Notes: The second generation Durango was introduced in 2004 and instantly came under fire for, well, catching on fire.

From 2004-2006 electrical overloading in the driver's side instrument panel caused numerous reports of interior fires. The interior infernos became so commonplace that Chrysler eventually issued a recall.

The problems didn't stop there, however. Owners of the recalled vehicles complained about being treated unfairly and given take-it-or-leave-it low ball settlement offers. "They offered me $2000 under NADA retail as a settlement," said one owner, "and have been rude and hostile to deal with." Nothing says awesome service like treating your customers rudely after their cars have already caught on fire.

2005 Dodge Durango limited, 5.7L hemi V8 stalls while backing up. First time it happened the truck started right back up immediately. The second time on 11/28/11, it took 3 times to restart the vehicle. This has only happened while in reverse. Apparently this is a common problem with the hemis and there is a tsb #0802404 to "reflash" the engine and update the software. The forums state that this is a fix for some vehicles, but not all. I am scared to be in this car with my kids now-what if we stall on the highway and get into a wreck? please fix this issue! our safety is my number one concern, and should be yours as well, Dodge!

I bought this vehicle used, and started having problems with it immediately after buying it. Gas overflows out of the gas tank almost every time I fill it up. It's going to catch on fire at some point because of this. Also, the engine stalls out at random times causing the vehicle to steer and brake very poorly until restarted. I noticed that other model years of this same vehicle have had the same problems as this one, however Dodge refuses to fix this one - even though other model years have been recalled and repaired. This stupid thing is going to blow up one day at the gas station, or I'm going to crash into somebody when it stalls, but I can't afford to spend thousands of dollars to take it every mechanic on the planet to find out what is wrong with it - especially since Dodge already knows what is wrong with it - but just won't take responsibility for building it poorly.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. The contact was driving approximately 20 mph and the engine stalled without prior warning. The vehicle restarted and the contact was able to continue driving. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing; however, they were unable to detect a trouble code. The failure continued to occur. In addition, whenever refueling the vehicle to its fuel capacity level the automatic shut off feature failed to engage causing fuel to spew onto the ground. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000. Updated 01/04/12 a sensor was replaced. At a cost of $400. 00 updated 01/09/12

Driving in my neighborhood at 35 mph and the engine turned off completely! I coasted to a full stop, turned off the ignition...waited 10 seconds and then turned the ignition back on and drove off. Vehicle also feels very sluggish especially driving over 55 mph. You must really push the pedal down to accelerate. Engine shutting off is soooo dangerous. God for bid this will happen when im driving with my children in the car while on the freeway!!!

2005 Dodge Durango 5.7 liter hemi. On freeway, engine started "pulling" and "missing" and shut off. 75 mph freeway speed, extremely dangerous situation. Had a car load of kids. Was able to put car in neutral, and start the engine (doesnt start immediately). Ran fine for about 50 miles afterwards. Happens about every 50 miles of driving. Has been going on for 6 months. Gives no codes as to what it can be. Cleaned throttle, worked a for about a week, then problem continued today. Its getting harder to get it started once it gives out. Egr replaced ($500), battery (200.00), spark plugs (150.00), replaced fuel pump last week (220.00 with labor)...I'm basically tired of this!!!!!!! checked Dodge forum and there is a lot of people having the same problem. No accidents have occured as of yet, but whats to say someone isnt going to be killed by this happening! please, please, please look into this problem. I'm all out of ideas, as are the Dodge dealers and mechanics I've dealt with. For your sake, this needs to be taken care of before the lawsuits start coming.

First, the cruise control stopped working. Then, the speedometer and odometer quit working when the ABS, parking brake, check engine, and traction control lights all came on. Took it to the dealer to repair the instrument cluster recall, and was told that it needs a new ABS control module and wiring harness. The wiring harness is completely melted, probably because of a short in the control module - at least that's what I was told at the dealership. The wiring harness is on a national backorder until late September, so I am without ABS brakes, traction control, and a speedometer/odometer until then.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. While the contact was driving approximately 35 mph the engine stalled and the check engine light began to illuminate on the instrument panel. The engine restarted and resumed as normal. The failure recurred and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The contact was informed that the vehicle was designed without an engine protection cover, which allowed water to leak into the engine causing severe damage. The sensor throttle and fourteen other parts were replaced within the engine. The vehicle remained at the dealer for one month for the repairs. Four days after the repair, the engine warning indicator illuminated intermittently. The contact planned to take the vehicle back to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was unknown.

2005 Dodge Durango stalling while slowing down or accelerating from a stop. January 2010 dealer said they could not do anything unless they could reproduce the problem. Happened again 4/8/2010. Hopefully it does not happen again in traffic and I get killed or kill someone. I am afraid to drive this car. Has happened over 15 times already. I lose all power when this happens, brakes, steering everything this is going to kill someone. I almost ran into a ditch 2 times already. There needs to be a recall on these vehicles. Just replaced fuel pump worked for a day and doing it again their is something wrong with these vehicles.

I am the owner of an auto repair shop, vehicle was driven by me with no engine running problem, no check engine light, no noises or sounds to indicate a problem. Vehicle reason for being at shop was the four wheel drive was not working. After replacing the transfer case motor, I turned key to start vehicle, heard a loud noise, got out of vehicle, inspected, we found that the engine had thrown the number eight connecting rod, thru the engine block. I have photo's, witnesses and documentation.

1-2 possible concerns- #1- (5.7 V.8 engine issue) as many others have complained the vehicle stalls and quits on sudden stops, and when making turn. After the engine shuts off - it can be restarted - but no engine code is generated. The dealer does not know the specific cause, but cites numerous things that it can be - wanting me to spend $$ to investigate each one and replace parts. The service department is not aware of any issues with the Durango and engine stall. The issue is unpredictable and nearly impossible to duplicate - even though it has happened a dozen or so times in the last 2 years. On several of this occasions I (and my family of 5) have been placed in life threatening situations and I have had issues with controlling the vehicle due to a loss of power steering and brake control. This issue may be related to the next complaint. It seems strange that this on many occasions happens right after a fill up. And - even though my VIN was recalled in 2005 and fixed - gas still sprays out the fuel filler and any gas station when you fill the vehicle up fully. To get around this - my vehicle cannot be filled all the way up. This issue is easy to duplicate - but my dealer states that the work done in 2005 should have fixed this and that any other issue are not a warranty/recall issues. Again - the dealer wants to charge me $$ to test and try to find an answer since according to them this problem has already been fixed.

My 05 Durango 5.7 hemi stalled without warning twice in my driveway and once as I was turning left. No power steering, no power brakes, no check engine lights came on, it was very sudden and find this to be dangerous. I have found that other Durango owners are having the same issues. I think it's time Dodge figures out what to do before something terrible happens. I Transport my grandchildren and also like to travel alot and I am afraid to drive now. Lets's hope this problem is acknowledged soon enough. Thank you.

There is a problem with my 2005 Dodge Durango 5.7L hemi. It stalls without warning when coasting. My wife complained but I didn't believe her much until it happened to me. I was approaching a turn then all of a sudden the car lost its power steering. I looked down at the RPM's and noticed the vehicle had turned off, I threw it into neutral, coasted and re-started the car. Almost hit the center divide and missed the turn and if my wife was driving I'm sure she would have gotten into an accident. I have read numerous online complaints from different forums with the same problem, this is definitely not an isolated issue!
