The traction light and service 4WD lights stay on, you can hear the 4WD kicking in and out when the car is sitting the driveway. Dodge acts like they have no idea what is causing this problem. You can google the symptoms and everybody that has a 04 to 06 Dodge is having the same issue. This should be something covered under a recall, there is to many people having the same issues.

As I braked to park the Durango, the engine abruptly stalled. Not sure why it stalled, but I know there was a problem with the 2004-2005 Durangos where the engine would stall during sharp turns while braking.

While driving down the highway, without any warning, my 2006 Dodge Durango stalled out. I still had radio and power steering, so I pulled over to the side of the road. I restarted my Durango, the check engine light was on, but was able to continue without any further issues. The same type of issue happens sporadically, regardless of weather or speed. There are times, after sitting at a light or stop sign, when you press the gas to go the gears are slow to engage and actually start moving. Sometimes the Durango shifts roughly as you accelerate or decelerate. As time has gone on the problem has become more persistent. I finally took my Durango in to our mechanic and he replaced the egr valve and the throttle position sensor. Within 2 weeks of these parts being replaced, my Durango again began stalling out. I did have the Durango stall out twice, back to back, losing all power in the vehicle, including power steering. I managed to get home and called the mechanic. This time he replaced the throttle control module. The Durango is still stalling out and sometimes very slow to engage gears when starting off from a stopped position. This problem was supposedly address in the 2004-2005 models and corrected. I am afraid to drive my Durango as it is not reliable; this is an accident waiting to happen. Clearly the problem has not been fixed.

This happens when parked only so far. I'm afraid could switch during driving. It has happened also when hitting the unlock button on the key fob. After buying the vehicle in 2009, it began shutting off when I decelerated for stops or turns. No engine light warning. In 2009, took it to the dealership 4 times. No help. Issues have continued. Took to dealership in 2010 3-4 times for same issue. Seems to shut off more in winter than summer but is very random. In 2011, more exploratory work was completed at dealership. Is there a lemon law? in 2012, I had someone else tinker on it. Still no assistance. The issues are less annoying now and becoming dangerous as it now shuts off at any time, at any speed, in any weather. I've tried new brakes, couple of new batteries, new computer chip, complete visual overall with computer assistance at dealership. Once when check engine light came on, O'reily's computer said that the sensor box had moisture in it. Dealership found no such evidence. All maintenance like oil changes are up-to-date. In 2013 in addition to the shutting off, there is a bumping when the brakes are applied and no one can contribute that issue to anything either! no help. Scared to drive but no $$ get a new one. I feel abandoned with a lemon.

My car at 65 miles on the highway car just turned off. No warning or notice. Car came to a crawl. I was lucky to get to the side of the highway. One there the car lights came on the check engine, red bolt lights and the oil light. After a few minutes I started car and it stalled then started but was a rocky start. I shut it off and restarted. The car worked fine. Then 3 months later the car did the same time. This when I placed it in the shop they said it was the transmission. So $1400 dollars later and 5 days I picked up my car and 3 miles away from shop the car did the same thing again. I took it back they did a test the codes where coming back as a weird codes. They did not have a clear answer so they did a throttle clean. Car worked fine. Next 3 months. I went out of state in June 2013 when my car stopped again my car was left in this state waiting on computer board that was out of stock until August 2013 when I picked up my car they placed the new system in it along with a wireless key. As soon as I crossed state line it stopped again. As you can see these issue are unsolvable or no want to take responsible for issue. I still have issue but I cant express it all in this some amount of time.

The service 4WD light comes on. The transfer case engages and disengages when the interior light comes on when its not running. 4WD turns on at low speeds when turning and locks up the wheels. When the dash light turns on the 4WD dash switch doesn't work. I was told encoder motor or servo motor or front control module. Sounds like it happens a lot and its a wiring problem. Its been going on now for over 2 years just looking for the right answer.

At random times, including while sitting in the driveway, the transfer case on my 2006 Dodge Durango AWD will engage the 4WD. It can happen while sitting in the driveway when you insert the key and before you start the engine. It also makes the clicking sound as if it is engaging when you unlock the doors (possible electrical problem?) it can also happen when driving while turning a corner, such as the sharp corners in a drive-thru. The effect is such that one wheel locks up as if one front wheel has the emergency brake on. When going straight there is no issue. I have researched on the internet and found forums where others are having the same exact problem. The problem is that it is random and intermittent, and difficult to reproduce at the dealership. Often their response is to simply replace one or more of the three main components without verifying that is the issue. This can be quite expensive for the owner and frustrating after spending large sums of money and the issue remains unsolved. I feel it is a safety issue because an inexperienced driver might have this issue in a drive-thru, and to overcome the lack of movement after pressing the gas pedal, they may rev the engine. This might overcompensate and cause the vehicle to dart forward into another car, or even into the building as the wheels are turned to go around the corner. If the 4WD disengages at the revving of the engine, this could also cause the vehicle to suddenly accelerate into another vehicle, pedestrian, or building.

Unfortunately have had problems with the Durango from the first week of purchase in 2006. The current issue and is very scary while driving is the 4 lo light will quickly flash rapidly for several flashes and then stops. The car will hesitate and seems to become engaged in 4 lo all on its own. It also makes a noise when unlocking vehicle that sounds like something under the vehicle is moving. It has be doing this more frequently. Concerned for my safety and there is no warning or control. Also when this occurs the steering is affected. In a parking lot recently I was almost rear ended because I was trying to make a sharp left turn and the vehicle just locked up completely and even when trying to accelerate it would not move. I have had many times taken this vehicle to the dealership for "instrument panel" recalls. It really seems that this car has serious safety concerns as this again seems to be electrical in nature and potentially could be fatal if driving and having complete lose of control. I have been concerned about this and also noted that many other Durango owners have the same problem. I would like for Dodge to be responsible for all of the issues with this vehicle and the repeated recalls and repairs that do not seem to help this vehicle. This is a serious issue and hope that a recall will be done before there are increased accidents or worse due to the poor quality and safety of these vehicles.

Transmission shifts by itself into 4WD. This happens while driving, and when the car is sitting unattended, with the ignition off. The transfer case makes an audible noise, then the wheels become very hard to turn while driving. This could easily result in a loss of control of the vehicle.
