power window regulator failure

Back in June I was on the way to work and I rolled down my window at the drive thru. When I left I went to roll it up and nothing happened. I could hear the motor running with a clicking noise. It was about to rain and in a panic rescheduled my meeting and went straight to the nearest auto parts store. After stripping my door apart in the parking lot I was informed that they did not carry the window regulator and also received the news that it was a dealer only item. I called the dealer and was quoted a price of $201.74 for the part and $136.00 labor. Knowing how long it took me to strip the door and put it back together all the while borrowing nothing more than a socket and a screw driver from the auto store I decided to check with local junk yards to find just the part that failed. Unfortunately no one would sell me just the pulley.

Due to the fact that our vehicles are still the current body style they want to sell the door as a whole charging just as much as what the dealer wanted for the part. I then decided to look online and find out if this was a common problem and I stumbled upon this site. I felt the pain that all of you shared and decided to try and do something about it. My fix worked until yesterday. I knew it was only temporary, but I needed to try so that I'd have some time to think and a test to base my theory upon. I have been researching and educating myself on the mechanics of the parts and have come up with a permanent solution. No more buying the same old part just to have it screw up again leaving you with another ridiculous bill. It is a onetime fix that will cost a fraction of the dealer repair bill for one regulator. How much fabrication will cost exactly is up to you, the complainants.

In order for me to get this part fabricated at an affordable price I will need an idea of volume. I am interested in feedback from YOU my fellow troubled Ford Owners. So far from the pictures and descriptions my assumption is that the problems are the same. I will be fronting the funds so assumptions will not cut it. Please be specific with details and feel free to be candid in your opinions. I have spoken to Ford Customer Relations and I am disgusted by the fact that Ford will still not initiate a recall and they sent me to they're engineering department to pitch my idea ultimately allowing them to mark it up and put the money back in their pockets. Right now they have a part that is a cash cow for them and no one that is willing to give them any competition. There are no aftermarket parts made for this so that has created a monopoly for the manufacturer. I have seen where people have suggested a class action suit but no one seems to want to organize such a time consuming and tedious feat. If no one is willing to go there then we will continue to be taken advantage of over and over again, unless we can come up with a new design and tell them where they can stick their subpar parts. I am a 26 year old residential general contractor; my only intention is not allowing a company to take advantage of me. If I can offer a solution that will help others with the same problem then I in good conscience, must offer. We are all engineers in some form or fashion. It is in our nature to be thinkers. We are the consumers. Who knows the product better than us? Imagine a fix that costs half the price of ONE dealer only window regulator. Attached is a highlighted picture of the troubled part.

My 2005 F-150 is my third Ford purchased as a new vehicle and generally find the quality very good. I was very surprised when my front passenger window regulator failed with only 15,600 miles on the odometer. I am usually the only one in the vehicle so the window is rarely used. I wrote to Ford Customer Service hoping maybe I would get some compensation for this defect. They sent me a letter back asking me to call a representative. The person I talked with sounded like he had marbles in his mouth and assured me that I would not receive any type of repayment. Things breakdown but I feel this is a material or engineering defect and a least partial compensation should be paid to owners who experience this problem with less than 50,000 miles or 5 years.

On Monday the 21st of September my driver's side window regulator failed on my 2005 F150. I used to brag about how my Ford was perfect. Well guess what? The other window failed TODAY!!!! Now I have two windows down and a bill I don't want to even discuss. Damn you Ford!! I will never buy another Ford again. I see that there are many complaints about this. The 2004's seem to have the edge but we 2005's are one year behind so I expect the numbers to increase. Thank you for hearing me out because the representative at Ford said there have been not enough complaints for a recall. Damn you. I never thought I would say this but Ford really does stand F-ound O-n (the) R-oad D-ead.

My truck only has 38,000 miles on it and the window regulator on the front passenger side is shot. My wife opened the window today just to hear it fall in the door. The drivers side has been making a clicking noise when you roll the window up, more than likely regulator failure also. So I expect to have to buy 2 sets of motor/regulators in the next week. A class action suit against Ford should be started for this problem or at least a mandatory re-call. $42,000 truck, 38,000 miles, now 2 bad window regulators.......nice.

This is the second window regulator failure in 1 1/2 years. Fortunately the first was covered under warranty but this one was not. In addition to the repair costs the dealer wanted an $85 diagnostic fee even though I already told what was wrong with the window since it is exactly what happened to me the last time I brought them my truck.

My wife drove my Ford 150 and upon return she informed me the passenger window had lowered by its self and would not go back up. A friend of mine works for an auto glass replacement company and I took it to him. He used his discount at the Ford Dealer to purchase a new regulator.The cost was $239.95 tax included. He installed it for me for $50.00. Because of the mileage I did not think much more about it. Things break and you fix them. Little did I know what lurks in the Ford F150. Just prior to buying this vehicle the passenger side real window had to have the regulator replaced. This I found out about when last week I came out to use the truck and the drivers side window was down and when I parked it all windows were up. Guess what ? Another window regulator. I did a thorough history check and found the real window repair and now have had three out of four window regulators fail and the scary thing is they replace the units with the same type and manufacture as the failed ones. I have not had an opportunity to fix the last one yet and instead called the Ford Complaint/Resolution center. They were well spoken, courteous and after giving them the vin# it took them all of about three minutes to tell me how sorry they were I was having problems but they could not help me. They stated they were unaware of any extended problem with the regulators of the 2005 F150. Do they live in a cave? I did ask them if they had look on the internet at Ford F150 complaints and was politely informed that it was not part of their job to search the web. So, they bury their pointed heads in the sand see nothing, hear nothing and help no one. I am convinced the best thing I can do is fix it, polish it and sell this sucker and the Toyota Tundra is looking better all the time.

power window regulator failure

hopefully this photo will come through...same story as everyone else here...went to roll down the window and it went down in a hurry. Next thing is the grinding noise because the coil/cable is in knots. Took the door panel off and found the cable in a mess and from what I can figure out the plastic end piece(s) are broke so even if I re-coiled, it still wouldn't stay. I was able to wedge a small piece of wood to keep the window up and i disconnected the switch to keep people from messing the motor up until I can save up the money to get this thing fixed. Guess winter is coming so perhaps I won't need the window down as much...

Ridiculous. 2005 Ford F150 41,000 miles. 2nd power window failure; passenger and now driver side. Fixed passenger power window motor and now regulator failed, then a few days later power window motor on driver side failed. I don't have an extended warranty so I have to pay BIG bucks to have this fixed. I live in the desert with both windows stuck down now and the temp reaches 115 degrees. This is a HUGE safety issue.

Step up to the plate FORD and fix this defective part. We own 3 Ford trucks and this is the first vehicle that we have experienced this problem and now are seriously considering trading in when fixed and going to another pick up-NOT a Ford unless they step up and take care of this.

After the regulator FAILED and dropped the window into the door, I took it all apart, re-wound the cable onto the gear, re-installed the regulator and put it all back together. The first time I raised the window, BAM! down it fell again. FIX THIS PROBLEM FORD!!!

I'm really dissappointed by this power window regulator made by ARVIN MERITOR and it sucks. I have to pay $500 to get this problem fixed, FORD needs to recall for this issue. My LOBO 2005 XLT really sucks !

Update from Oct 1, 2009: I just wrote to the manufacturer of this component and here is the answer that I received:

I was very surprised to read your email stating that you had found a lot of complaints regarding this component, as our quality rating with Ford is very high. Without seeing this particular window regulator it is very hard for me to tell what the condition of the window regulator was, what the failure mode was and or if the door seal had been compromised, etc. Please note that I have forwarded your email on to our plant manager and to our quality manager so we can explore this issue further. I have owned ford trucks, a 1987, 1981, 1987, 1994, 1999 and my last a 2005 F150 Lariat.

I had never taken any of my trucks to the dealer other than for oil changes and thats the reason for my loyalty to ford "you take care of me and I will take care of you." I have had several problems with my 2005 F150 Lariat, but the one that keeps coming back is BAD WINDOW REGULATORS where the window just slams down. it has happened 5 times; twice on the river side and once on the other 3 windows. The first four times ford took care of the problem But this fifth time they don't want to pay for for their defect that's going to cost 536.00 dollars to fix.

Due to the fact Ford has neglected or refused to fix the defect I will seek legal counsel, because I don't think they (FORD) is fulfilling their obligation to take care of their defects. I will never buy a FORD prodeuct again, and will advise anyone to think twice before doing so.

Loud pop sound, and then front passenger window falls into the door. It sounds like I was lucky in that mine lasted longer than some, but still a problem Ford should look into.

Last year was when my passenger side regulator went out and I can only get the part from Ford for around $200 I was planning on buying the part and having it fixed but then I got laid off for a few months so I had to wedge the window up and several times a day I'm having to push my window up total pain in the ass!!! Then a month ago I got off work attempted to roll my windows down to cool my truck off and BAM!!! there goes my passenger side rear window!!! Then today same thing get off work roll the 2 windows that I still have and BAM!!!! there goes my rear drivers side window. After I finish writing this I'm going right down to the Dodge dealership and trading this truck in since Ford has no recalls and offers no help! Ive always had good luck with Ford vehicles this is really disappointing!

This is the second window regulator failure, The first was the drivers side about a year and a half. Now the passengers side went out. Apparently Ford has had many complaints regarding these crappy window regulators and they think these are not a safety issue. When they sold me the truck they told me I was buying a GREAT product! When the window fell I was in the middle of dust storm in approaching Phoenix, Az and almost crashed into a semi truck next to me, HOW THE F*CK IS THIS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE??????? I bet Toyota considers this a safety issue. Own up Ford and admit this a safety issue and replace them free of charge for your valued customers!!!!!

Only 41119 miles on my 05 f150 fx4 and my driver side window made a pop an fell inside the door while i was letting it up,as i was looking online on how to fix the problem i see many other complaints about the same problem.....WHY does FORD want to put these SH*TTY PARTS on there trucks?......And why don't FORD make a RECALL on these trucks........On top of that i just got a 2009 FORD ESCAPE,hope FORD MOTOR COMPANY doesn't make a FOOL out of me for buying it !!!!
