CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.

From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.

By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

My car would not start approximately 15 days before I reported this current problem (Mid December) to the dealership. I took the vehicle, Jeep Grand Cherokee 2011, to the dealership (as I stated, 15 days before) and the dealership replaced my battery. The problems were typical issues one would find with the (TIPM) Totally Integrated Power Module (car would not start, FOB issues with opening and locking doors, nothing electrical within the vehicle had power except the red security light would blink). I told the dealership that I didn't believe the problems were with the Battery but that's what the dealership said the problem was.

After the dealership replaced my battery, approximately two weeks later, I was leaving for work and started having problems with the FOB again. The vehicle again didn't start clean. Lights flickered a few times and the door locks operated on their own. Some of the same issues I was having with the vehicle before when the dealership told me the problem was the battery (I payed approx. $500.00 to replace the old one).

Later that day (2 January 2023) I left work and the engine began to smoke. I pulled the vehicle over and was able to get it parked. I opened the hood and the Alternator was smoking and smelled like it was burning but didn't see a fire. I sprayed the alternator with a fire extinguisher and the smoke and smell receded.

From there I had the car towed to the dealership (Safford, Springfield Va.). They said it would take approximately 2 weeks and they'd call me or let me now what the problem was. Well, I received a call a day or two later and they said the issues were the TIPM and the Alternator / Battery. Two weeks later I called the dealership and they didn't have the parts. I also asked if I could get a loaner or something and I was refused that request. Today is now 2 February 2023 and I have still not received an update.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as following years, is known to be one of the worst cars for having electrical problems. The TIPM appears to be one of the major issues yet JEEP Chrysler has had no recalls on the vehicles inspite of hundreds of complaints that are safety issues. And now, a Chrysler dealership doesn't seem to be able to find parts to fix the issues.

I would be interested to find other people with TIPM problems and if you know of any class action lawsuits against JEEP Chrysler for this manufacturing mess of a vehicle.

I woke up to the engine not starting because the battery was too dead to turn it over. Got out and jump starter pack and it started, no problem, and drove for 10 minutes. I then let it idle for 10 minutes, but when I turned it off I had noticed it had lost more electrical power and the lights were dimmer. I retried jumpstarting it 4-5 times with my jump starter until it was out of battery with no luck and it made everything electric extremely hot including my jump starter unit and connectors, which restarted the engine once but it was wobbling a lot when it restarted.

I had to turn it off and filled it with coolant and water just in case that was the problem. I had roadside assistance come the next day with a huge jump starter and they couldn't start the car and he said it was smoking slightly under the alternator due to the electrical failure and the same components getting extremely hot. I have had it towed to the mechanic and they have replaced the battery and starter with no luck as to getting it started, and it is now stuck in park up against a curb and wont shift into neutral to move and be towed to another garage. I am lost as to what to do and almost ready to sell it as a salvaged piece of junk. We have ordered parts and are waiting for them to come in, will post update when we get this piece of junk fixed.

GOOD FIX!! - I have two remotes for the car and neither one was recognized by my Jeep, AT ALL, nor would they open the doors or set off the alarm. NOTHING.. Absolutely nothing! The batteries in them were fine. So, all I did was disconnect the Jeep's battery (located under the passenger seat) for 2 minutes then reconnected it. Boom! that reset the Jeep computer and my remotes worked fine again! The car started as it should again! All good now.

2011 lemon Jeep has had multiple recalls. Still in shop after 7 days still no power. Pulled out of my driveway whooshing sound started. Drove 2 blocks to cvs battery light came on. I had just replaced battery in Nov. $200.

Called mechanic said it could be alternator failing. I drove 2 blocks went in post office couldn’t open my car with fob. Complete power failure. Car towed. They tried 2 different alternators no power. Said my new battery damaged, advance replaced due to warranty. Said would have to order new computer, yesterday they were still troubleshooting at 1:40 before opening box. I called this am and no one has called me back. Previous fuel relay switch recall could that be causing the problem.. Jeep has had recall for almost 396000 jeeps with similar problem but mine is not on list. Can anybody help. Thanks.

Update from Mar 4, 2019: Well got my car back after paying for new alternator and computer for almost $1200. Battery was replaced also but was in warranty. 24 hrs later I get 2 separate messages suspension air bag service required immediately, I’m back at shop. My car was here 8 days on lift while they were troubleshooting, why wasn’t this discovered. My Quadra Ii is not working properly. Front lower than back. From ground to top of tire wells in front 28” and in back 34”.. Jeep is in lowest setting will not raise. Please help

So, on 02/15/2016 I bought a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with about 80K miles. Needless to say this was more of an impulse buy than anything else. I've taken good care of the car, regular oil changes and rascal fixes at the dealership. I had the car problem-free until last weekend! Well actually there's another issue with the A/C actuators that I'll log in later... But this current issue had caused me a major headache.

For the last few months I've noticed that the car wouldn't recognize if the key was in the vehicle which prevented me from starting the car right away. I had to reach inside my pocket and move the keys around for the the car to recognize the keys in order to use to push to start. That wasn't that bad. I figured I needed to replace the battery on the key. Other times I would start the car (push to start) and the car would immediately turn off. To resolve this I would just press the push to start button to go back to off, then try to turn it on again and it would start.

Since this only happened about 4-5 times in about a year I put it off as a low priority. Well, last weekend my Jeep would not start. I went to the store in the AM and when I got out It would crank but not turn over. I waited several minutes. I checked the fuses for the fuel pump took them out and put them back in and after about 20 min i tried to turn it on and the car started. I drove the car for the rest of the day without a problem.

The next day it started fine, I went to play ball and on the way back home the car suddenly turned off and left me stranded in the middle of the road. A Police officer helped me push the car to the side. 20 min later the car started again and drove back home. I drove it to my mechanic and didn't find anything wrong with it since at that time the car was working. I drove it to work for the rest of the week workout a problem then it happened again... It left me stranded at work, However it took more than 20 min for the car to start again. It took like 5 hours.

Today the car started fine. I called the dealer and my car had the fuel pump relay recall done in 2015. Ive read all of the reviews and it all indicates that I have a bad TIPM. I don't know what to do a this point. I'm hoping Jeep issues another recall to fix this once and for all.

I had the issue with the Fuel Pump relay causing the vehicle to crank but not start. I replaced the Fuel pump relay, the fuse and the wiring.....the jeep was running for a little bit and then it stopped same issue. So I replaced the Fuel Pump, the Fuel pump relay and the fuse....worked GREAT until the same issued occurred. So I did some research and thought it was potentially the "Anti-theft system" being triggered because of a battery potentially dead in one of the FOB's .....so I replaced both batteries and the Jeep worked fantastic.....well 3 weeks down the road and guess what the Jeep is doing the SAME issue!!!!! I have exhausted all ways of repairing the issue and started to do deeper research on the issue to find out the brain of the issue is quite literally the brain of the vehicle...the TIPM.....hoping there would be a recall on this issue I went on the Chrysler page to find out that not only is the issue NOT recalled but they knew the TIPM was faulty when they continued to manufactured the vehicles. My jeep is currently parked until this extremely expensive issue can be resolved....as a single mom with only my income and no other assistance....my jeep will not be getting fixed anytime soon and I am heart broken because that was my source to get to my job and take my daughter to school, its almost winter and the 4wd comes in high demand where I live. PRAYING AND BEGGING for a cheaper solution!!!

Update from Dec 6, 2017: I forgot to add that when it does start and I am driving the engine randomly dies while driving! I was on the freeway with my 6 year old daughter going 65mph and the engine died causing dramatic slow down and the car behind me almost rear-ended me I panicked and kept pressing on the gas to try to get it to start and luckily it did and took off but wowzers that was scary. Also while I was trying to drop my daughter off at school the jeep died while driving I was able to safely pull over and place the vehicle into park and "shut it off" while attempting to restart it and had the crank but no start issue.....I tried 5 times the 6th time it finally started and I was able to drop her off. BOTH situations were terrifying and both had my daughter in the car

I have logged this issue as I believe it is part and parcel of a much larger problem that being my TIPM. Which had some almost dyer consequences for me and my Wife, not once but twice. But I will log a complaint about this. The reason i logged this is to show that Jeep replaced the fuel pump instead of addressing the real issue of TIPM.

The engine of my Jeep Grand Cherokee is running, the start/stop button is not responding. The car was sent several times[ on 31 October, 3rd November, 7 November & 9 November 2016] to the dealership the technician in Ronnies Motors in Eastern Cape East London cannot identify the problem. Firstly they blame the seal of the back lamp, secondly blaming the spillage inside the ignition and thirdly blaming the car tracker.

When I am noticing this is happening when its raining.

engine won't turn over, won't start

The problem all began with the "key not detected sensor" on the dash. I had it fixed at the dealership (approx.$400). A few weeks pass and the sensor " key not detected" returns. as if that wasn't bad enough the very next day " while on a major highway" all of the censors on the dash illuminate, the A.C. shut off, transmission changed from drive to 1st gear and the wipers turned on. I almost caused a major accident because the truck lost drastic speed due to the changing of gears that incurred during the electrical malfunction! I was able to drive home where the truck died and would not restart. I had it towed to the dealership.

The dealer could not find the problem and has called they're corporate techs to assist with the problem. Then I was told that they found a burnt part behind the dash and something about the fuse box which sounds close to the TIPM issue I see on all the jeep forums and also seems to be a faulty fuse box. I was told my warranty does not cover either one. This electrical problem is not only a fire hazard but also a safety driving hazard. How is this not a recall? I am interested in a class action suit. anyone with info on a class action suit please contact me.

On 4 occasions in the last 2 years I have had to get a jump start from AAA or a stranger. I finally bought and carry in my car a set of jumper wires 16 feet long. I have replaced the battery 2 times in the last 2 years.

The battery goes dead after 6 days and the car won't start. I can't take it too the Airport anymore because its a pain to get AAA to come into a parking area in LAX. Yesterday I bought a $126 jump start alternate battery I will carry because this is going to happen in some unfortunate area where my wife is alone at night.

Drove the JGC Overland on a trip. After a 700 mile trip, the car would not start. I was no where near a dealership as I was in the mountains on vacation. I was able to get in touch with the dealership and they couldn't give me any ideas. The jeep would not turn over even though I was getting power to it. After trouble shooting it for hours, I replaced the Ignition Fuse and it started up. I explained this to the dealer when I returned and they tested it and couldn't find any reason why the fuse blew. They were surprised because they said it should come up as to what made the fuse go bad. Again, another issue with not a good answer.

I have an unreliable unusable $30k hunk of metal sitting in my driveway. Jeep would intermittently crank but not start for up to 20 minutes, so took it in to the dealer for the fuel pump relay recall, assuming this should solve the problem. Drive it home, same problem occurs the next morning. This time wouldn't turn over long enough I had it towed back to the dealer. They confirm fuel pump relay work was done, and can't find anything wrong with the car. It started for them, so I pick it up and drive it home. Intermittent crank no start occurs for a few more weeks getting bad enough car is unusable for the majority of the day, so take it back to the dealer. Mechanic says WIN module is throwing errors and is the cause of the issue. So have it replaced for $645. Drive it home. Same problem still occurring!!!!

I am beyond frustrated now. Towed back to dealer again! This time, they say the fuel pump relay was faulty again, and the TIPM should be replaced. How is all this not part of the recall?? After all these fixes, I get the car back. One week later, it stalls out on a busy NY highway! And then, the same crank/no start! I have had it with Chrysler and this dealer's ineptitude at solving this problem. So I have it towed to a different dealer, where it now sits awaiting diagnosis. The recall has not fixed this problem it seems however, and I am at my wit's end!

Concerned for my wife as she drives the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Have taking it back to the dealer. The dealership hopefully repaired the problem the first time. So far I have not had any more issues.

Update from Jun 29, 2020: FCA records indicate that your vehicle VIN # 1J4RS5GT8BC513586 was included in previous Safety Recall P54 (NHTSA14V-530) or Safety Recall R09 (NHTSA 15V-115). My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is now experiencing the issues that are discussed in the Safety Recall V62 Fuel Pump Relay Failure. This safety concern can cause the vehicle to not start due to the fuel pump stoppage, an engine stall while stopped and/or while moving, which can cause the vehicle to crash without prior warning. This is a huge safety concern for my family and I. We have taken the vehicle to the dealership on 3 occasions concerning this issue with the fuel pump relay stoppage with no long term fixes. I have no one else to turn to and asking for your help to resolve this issue.

My Jeep has always had problems since I bought it built new at the factory in late 2010. The passenger's heated seat didn't work, a speed sensor in one of the wheels went bad, the blower went out, a water pump broke, the rear view camera sometime never wanted to appear in the center console, a mysterious clicking noise from the front left of the vehicle that randomly occurred and could not be duplicated for the dealer to investigate, the alarm randomly going off, the transmission downshifts harshly sometimes causing more forward acceleration than is desired, and lastly my Jeep 2011 won't start. Yep, just one day out the the blue depressing the brake pedal and pushing the start button won't turn on the car. Depressing the brake pedal and sticking the key fob into the ignition switch and turning the key clockwise gives the same result. Nothing, no starter cranking, no noise what so ever... I have no clue what the issue might be...

I will have to tow the car to the dealer, and most likely have them charge a ridiculous amount for a part that should work on a vehicle with less than 45k miles on it. I wonder if anyone has taken the route of using your state's lemon laws to return the vehicle to the manufacturer?

I attempted to leave my house to go to the grocery store yesterday after having toured my friends around the mountains here in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Parked my SUV in the garage, said goodbye to my friends, went to start my SUV again and it's completely dead. Every single warning light comes on the dash and the wipers come on as well. It won't turn over, nothing. I have had several days over the last few months where it has taken a few attempts to start the vehicle. Now it won't start at all. My husband thought maybe it was just the battery, so we charged it overnight. Battery is fully charge but it still won't turnover and start. I googled my problem and found this website. This sounds exactly like my problem and when I have it towed to the dealer tomorrow, I will certainly let them know of my suspicions. I am always right on track with my maintenance and upkeep of this vehicle and I am the sole owner. I drive a mix of city and highway and never take it off road.

I will update this after I take it to the dealer.

Car, will not start. (Thanksgiving Day) Vehicle tries to turn over, but will not start. Sounds similar to other TIPM and fuel pump problems. Purchased the vehicle about three months ago and is our fourth jeep purchase in the last few years. Will call the dealership where we purchased the vehicle tomorrow (Westgate Jeep in Raleigh, NC) and have them fix the problem. This sounds like a serious problem that is developing quickly and hopefully the manufacturer does the right thing and handles it quickly. Also, will visit our sales rep who sold us the vehicle and inform him of his legal and/or ethical obligation to inform future potential customers of problems.
