NHTSA — Steering Problems

2008 Saturn Aura (Page 1 of 4)

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2008 Aura’s issues with brakes, such as worn out rotors, isn’t as severe as the prior model year, but let’s just not start awarding them any brake awards just yet. Does that even exist? “The Brakies”?

One thing the 2008 does share with the 2007 is a recall of a busted gear shifter cable which can make it look like your car is in park, when the transmission is still engaged. You can only imagine what kind of fun that causes.

While driving on the overpass/highway, car jumps/skips to the side (opposite of turning direction). Steering shaft has been replaced and didn't solve this issue. We have had front end basically re-done also. Losing power steering fluid; power steering whines and is very stiff. I am convinced that this vehicle should be on the recall list!!! very disappointed in the amount of money we have had to sink into this car. We've been dealing with a continuum of repeated problems for 3 plus years!

The contact owns a 2008 Saturn Aura. The contact stated that there was a sudden loss of power steering while driving. The steering wheel was extremely tight and the contact had to coast the vehicle over to the side of the road. The eps warning indicator flashed shortly after the failure occurred. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle on more than one occasion because the power steering failed while in drive; however, it functioned when the vehicle was parked. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 14E044000 (steering) and 14V153000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.

I received the recall for the power steering problem back in 2014. I had the work done on the power steering per the recall parameters. However, the power steering is now having problems": it seems when the outside temp is around the 40 degree and below mark, that the power steering won't operate? I go to turn the car on, the car comes to life, and the "power steering" warning lights up on the instrument cluster? the wheel is 'dead-in-my-hands as well? after turning the ignition off then back on several times will it then activate the power steering" but, not always the case. So far, once it comes to life, the steering has not gone out. When I inquired of the warranty, apparently, per the recall details, the part(s) are only warranted for a year and its been approx. A year and a half sinc ethe work was done. Very frustrated and very concerned that the power steering may go out while driving. Especially concerned for other drivers and occupants of this vehicle!! I can send any copies of the recall performed at the local Chevy dealership if needed.

While driving down a busy road and slowing down my vehicle as the light turned from yellow to red, my steering wheel instantly froze. The indicator screen in my car read: Power steering. It became instantly impossible for me to turn my steering wheel. I put the car in park and put my hazard lights on. I turned off my motor and started my engine again and my steering wheel was back to its normal way of usage.

Al of the sudden the power steering warning light went on April 8 when I started to work. There was no problem on the way to work, when I was driving home, the light went on again and I could not control the steering for several minutes. I pulled over for a minute until I got home. I spoke with my hubby who said I should call the dealer. We proceeded to check the internet for any other problems that had been reported to find that this is a common problem. I am now afraid to drive the car because the steering went out of control and I could not. I treasure my life. I bought this car used 2 years ago and had problems in turning-a clicking when I turned right or left-this was supposedly fixed by the garage. Can this be fixed--that is the power steering problem and paid for by the dealer" oh I was on an intercity street going straight. Can the dealer buy the car back from me or pay for the repairs? as I mentioned, I am now afraid to drive the car. Should I take it into the dealer or garage or wait to talk with you"

My husband was alone driving, was early a.M. when a coyote ran out on country road. He has had this many times before having lived in the area over 60+ yrs. He was in 2 lane road, he went to brake and swerved when he said the car became unable to control, he hit the burn on side of road flipping car numerous times ending upside down. He was stuck in seat belt unable to get loose for 15 min finally getting out of it. He was seen by drs @ hospital and released with bruised ribs, cuts and abrasions. When I talked to him on phone later he relates what had happened also saying "it seemed like the car had a mind of its own, it wouldn' T steer or brake right." I told him to rest and I would talk to him later. That was the last time I ever talked to him, as he died of the blunt force trama from that accident, that was Oct 7, 2014. I believe his vehicle is to blame for this accident, as I know what kind of driver he is, off road, around our rural area animals are always jumping out on the road, and he never has had a accident. He doesn't panic, he knows how to drive off road, and have raced in score off road functions in he younger days. He was an excellent driver, driving others, because he didn't drink, and was very safe in driving.

Popping noise while slow speed turning first reported to a local GM dealer in 2/13. Dealer confirmed shaft was defective but didn't think it was dangerous yet, so was not repaired. After learning in 7/14 that GM had just issued a recall on these shafts, (NHTSA campaign number 14E044000), I returned to the same dealer to finally get it replaced. Service manager again stated that the intermediate steering shaft was defective. However, GM management has steadfastly refused to allow the local dealership to replace my unit because my vehicle's VIN was not included in the their list of recall eligible models!

Was recalled for a electric power steering assist. Not even two months later the power steering system has completely failed. I cant even go a quarter mile down the road.it will drive a little down the road and power steering will flash on the dash and turns are almost impossible. I have to shut the vehicle off and turn it back on. This is very dangerous especially if there isn't a place to pull over without making a turn. I called GM and they told me I would have to pay out of pocket to get it fixed and they would not reimburse me for what it costs.I don't think this is right considering that this was the one thing that they were supposed to fix I cant afford to fix it. I have put over two grand in this car all within a year. Mind you this is my only car and I cant get another one. I think that GM should take some responsibility and fix this because this could cost someone their life if they aren't willing to take care of this issue.
