I have this 99 Camry that overall has been a very trouble free car; however, in the past year it has developed a problem where when taking off either from a dead stop or trying to accelerate at highway speed it surges or there is a loss of power. It feels like it kicks back and usually if you really put your foot into the gas you can get past the hesitation. Now it did throw a code and it said that there was a problem with cylinder 5. So, I had already changed the spark plugs so then I changed the spark plug wires. I also changed the fuel filter and the throttle position sensor. Well, guess what, it is now hesitating even much worse! I am really done with this and I hope someone can help me. I am thinking maybe fuel pump? or the coils for the spark plug wires as I did not change those. I don't know but it is really getting on my nerves. Our Dodge van has been far more reliable than this Camry.

Engine surges periodically. Have had tune up including spark plug as suggested by dealer but still have problem. Only way to stop it is to turn car off and wait for half hour or so. Seems to happen when going up steep hills!!!! Even dealer didn't have a clue as to what problem may be, seeing as he couldn't get problem to happen when testing it out.
