2004 DAKOTA, PRETTY GOOD SHAPE. BOUGHT WITH 83000 MILES 4 MONTHS AGO. FEW PROBLEMS UNTIL 2/16/2019 , POWER STEERING GOT VERY STIFF AND WOULD NOT RETURN TO CENTER AFTER TURN. SEEMS LIKE IT "CATCHES" ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH TURN BOTH DIRECTIONS. GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. HAVE NOT HAD IT LOOKED AT YET.

Dakota SXT 3.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 109,000 miles

Problem came on suddenly. When cold especially, the power steering is very hard to turn. As it warms up it gets a little better but never is normal. I replaced the rack and pinion last fall as it was starting to leak and wanted to repair while the weather was still good. I have read many other complaints that are experiencing the same problem. I was thinking of replacing the pump next but most complaints said this did not help. Not sure what to do next.

Update from Mar 26, 2018: After viewing other drivers that are experiencing this problem it was recommended to spray the u-joints on the intermediate shaft of the steering column. This is where the problem is. I ended up replacing the intermediate shaft and it is working great!!

Dakota 4.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 105,000 miles

Power steering doesn't work when starting up. Comes back to 90% after driving 10 miles or so. This is not safe because the wheel does not come back to center with out turning it back to center. I don't know what to do because of reading what others have tried to fix the problem to no avail. I want to keep the vehicle but not if problem cant be fixed and be made safe. Other than those I like the truck.

Update from May 6, 2016: had the intermediate shaft or lower power steering shaft replaced and seems to be 100% fixed.......for now. $191.00 out the door. The issue was easily identified and obvious. Will post again if fix is temporary.
