CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

Car was exiting highway and while on exit ramp a popping sound was heard in the engine compartment. Car was immediately pulled over on the side of the ramp and engine was turned off. The car was towed to a repair garage. The mechanic stated that one cylinder had no compression and the top of the engine was disassembled. The mechanic found that the piston was detached/broken from the crankshaft and would require a major engine overhaul or engine replacement.

My 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L DOHC engine needs to be replaced. I heard a noise that could be described as a "diesel engine" sound while my car was idling and running at lower speeds. I had several friends listen to it and they could not diagnose the problem without getting "inside the engine". I planned on taking my car to the shop the next day, and while my car was parked and in idle, the car died. When trying to restart it, it would run for 5 to 10 seconds and then die again. I had the car towed to a repair shop and the mechanic spent three hours diagnosing the problem and creating an estimate. The bill was $280 including the tow and labor. The mechanic indicated that the timing chain broke and subsequently cracked the valve cover and damaged the valves, among other components. The estimate to replace my engine is $4500 including parts and labor. I had approximately 70,000 miles on my Intrepid. Upon researching this issue on the internet, I found that many other vehicle owners with this same engine came into the same problem, most losing their engine between 30,000 and 70,000 miles. I have not had the work done to my car yet, due to the outrageous cost, and I have to decide now if it is worth it to repair it myself or just purchase another vehicle. Something should be done about this if many other people have had the same problem.

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 liter engine within the last 7 months I have had engine failures. I have a little over 60000 miles on the car. I have been informed even by my local Dodge dealer and other mechanics this is a common thing. My local dealer wants me to put in a 3.2 liter motor.

2000 Dodge Intrepid with 2.7 L engine without warning or prior problem blew up while wife driving on freeway. Lost steering due to anti-freeze on belt. She was able to get off roadway without losing control. This engine has thousands of complaints about blown engines due to sludge buildup/water pump/design problems. My vehicle was properly maintained and engine replacement will cost $5000. Chrysler should be held accountable. Us govt. Should step up and enforce recall of defective 2.7L DOHC engines!

I bought a new 2000 Dodge Intrepid for 22K, nice car but pc of crap engine. I was aware of the 2.7L piece of crap engine one before my engine died.. I check/change the oil regularly around 2800-3000 miles... Dodge denies consumers do this though.. for the last year or so, every 1500 miles I was always down a quart of oil..." no leaks, can't see any smoke.. my engine sensor light came on. Within the next few days my car was acting like I had no oil in it.. no power with engine. I was on the highway right next to a Dodge dealer which was convenient. They had diagnosed that my crank and cam sensor were "no good".. and replaced them for $400.. a month later I was coming home from work and my oil light came on...? I pulled over into a parking lot to check the oil.. I was only down maybe a pint. The next morning I checked/added the oil and went to work. I never made it to work. About 1/4 mile from work the engine sounded like I was out of oil?" I brought to the repair shop near work. They said it was internal and would touch it after draining some oil and saw metal flakes... I spoke with my mechanic and he told me all about the lovely 2.7 engines.. I went on the internet and have read horror stories about this engine, as well as Dodge dealers would do nothing for the consumer. I've been telling everyone I see with a Dodge 2.7 to get rid of it fast. And never to buy a "Dodge/chrsyler" product until they recall and replace this engine..

On Feb 17,2006, my kids was going out of town after about 55 miles out of town. My daughter heard a sound under the hood, the oil light came on she pulled over on interstate 10. Then she tried to start it up again and it wouldn't start. The tow truck came after about an hour. Took it to the shop and we was told the engine had locked up (blew). It only have about 71,000 miles, bought at about 18,300 miles paid cash. I was told it is hard to find a used motor and it will cost from 2,500-3,000 to fix it and a new motor will cost 4-6,000 dollars. We can't afford that we have 2 kids in college and 2 kids to graduate next year and plus 2 smaller kids, on a fixed income and my husband is disabled. Someone needs to do something about this problem because I have read a lot of complaints tonight. I would have never known this many people was having the same problem I am having. This is a shame. Please do something. Thank you

Events leading up to the failure included flickering oil light, loud knocking from the engine. The consequences of the failure resulted in complete destruction of the engine. My Dodge Intrepid, 65000 miles, purchased brand new, had its oil light come on and a knock start in the engine. After bringing it to a dealer, was told that I need a new engine for $5700.. out of warranty, claim through daimler Chrysler was denied, citing failure to follow scheduled maintenance. I supplied dates and mileage and receipts showing all but one oil change done under the recommended 7500 mile limit. Now being told it should be every 3 thousand miles. This is not what the warranty book says.

While driving, my Dodge Intrepid started to shudder. After pulling over and turning off the car, it would no longer restart. It was towed to a service station and they informed me that the 2.7 engine was shot due to sludge. I was shocked since the car was 5 years old, had roughly 78K miles, and was well-maintained. So far Chrysler has been unresponsive to my problem.

2.7 V6 engine began to make noises like the valve train was starving for oil. Loud clatter. Took to a local mechanic who tried to repair the engine by replacing the timing chainm tensioner. Engine was never correct after that and failed. William T. pritchard Dodge's service writer told me to get rid of the car and that the 2.7 V6 daimler Chrysler engine was nothing but junk!
