CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

I changed the sensors the codes told me to and after doing so took it to a repair shop because from 2 codes there are now six codes. The shop told me it was a bad computer. I found one and almost spent the money to get one flashed. but decided to take it to Dealer. The computer is good but the timing chain jumped and told me that now I need a new engine. What the F is going on?

OK this car has been a real pain for me as it is now almost 7 months later and it's still sitting in my driveway not driveable. My check engine light came on and not a few minutes later of trying to get it back home, every single light on my dashboard went haywire! My radio lights went out completely so I thought maybe the battery went dead and i replaced that, still a problem, had the alternator replaced cause it was burnt up, still a problem and the codes coming up also were for bad oxygen sensors so i replaced those as well. Car worked fine for about a day then those same codes came back up on the car saying the oxygen sensors were bad. I paid over $500 for these things and still nothing! Well i'm going this Thursday to get it checked and hopefully fixed. For some of you who are experiencing the same problems I found some real useful information that might help if you need new catalytic converters and or a new computer. There is an extended emissions warranty for dodge vehicles which is a 8 year or 80,000 mile warranty that covers the cost of labor and those two parts which mine just is under in the mileage and dodge actually said mine didn't expire until October of this year which shocked the crap out of me that they even owned up to that information i found right on the internet, i do know that some computers for these cars are outrageous around the $3000 mark and that doesn't include labor so if that is what is wrong with my car then dodge will pay up and fix it. I just think its a shame that cars cost so much these days and they put such crappy parts on it and make it also to where you can't fix them yourself. Of course though then dodge would be missing out on more of all of our hard earned money to replace parts that should be working right to begin with! Im so disappointed with this car cause when i first bought it, i loved it and had it for 2 years with great gas mileage then this happened!!!! While working class folk are having to spend their money on this joke of a vehicle i think the big CEO's of this company should have to take huge pay cuts for every dang car that comes into a auto shop with cheap parts on it. Instead they make cut backs and take huge bonuses for themselves. That's why these companies are in trouble now with bankruptcy etc. if they would make a decent car, then people would keep buying them and they wouldnt be broke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I keep getting the code for the 2 upstream O2 sensors are bad in my 2002 dodge intrepid. When it is cold it seems that only 2 cylinders are firing but when it warms up it runs fine. I have changed the 2 upstream O2 sensors three time and and spark plugs and insulators 2x. What else could case this problem or what could be making those O2 sensors go bad so fast This has all happened in the last week or so.

i have a 2002 dodge intrepid. the engine came on i took it in had it diagnosed they said it was my O2 censor. i had that fixed and the engine light came back on so i took it to the dealership and they said i was the pc. my car was still under warranty for the pc. they put the first on and it didn't take so they replaced it with another one. left dealership and the light came back on..Now the car shakes and when you step on the gas at time it doesn't go. it seems to take a minute or so before it catches and then just takes off..to it back they said that my harness was broken and they wont fix it because they believe the didn't break it. we took it somewhere else they fixed the harness and put in a new fuel filter. after that the car keep over heating took it back in and had to get a new intake hose because the other one was eroded. we also had a full tune up done. and once again the car is shaking bad even when the car is parked it shakes and the engine light blinks. sometime the car will even back fire and thats new. even when you push on the pedal it still takes awhile for it to catch and have the car pick up speed. i have a feeling that its the computer is faulty and thats whats causing the problem, because every code that comes up we get it fixed and it never seems to solve the problem. what else can we replace and fix? and the car is getting worse as we speak...and the dealership wont help and is trying to charge me for another diagnostic test with is $150 and then they said i would have to pay for the next pc, even though the one they put in was i didn't have to pay for in January was under warranty and 80,000 miles the pc is well over $3,000.00 and that may not even solve the problem.
