Ram 1500 SLT 4.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 4,000 miles

Since it was Brand new with 28 miles I've had an intermittent engine misfire with no MIL...It does not occur very often however when it does it is very annoying. It's happened maybe 20-30 times in the three years I've had the truck.

It usually happens while idling at a traffic light or when I first start it in the morning. It feels like multiple cylinders missing all in a row. It drops the RPM's so much it almost stalls then all of the sudden the computer compensates by raising the engine speed which in turn makes the truck lurch forward and takes additional brake pressure to keep it from hitting the car in front of me. This all happens within a VERY short period of time like maybe 10-15 seconds so it catches you off guard.

I've taken it in to the dealer but of course it never does it when it's there. I have a scanner and after it does it I can see there are a lot of misfire counts on several cylinders but the dealer says it's normal to see this and if the misfire count was high enough to cause my complaint then the MIL would be on or at least setting a code.

If I clear the misfire counts and check it again after a long period when it has not missed.....I get zero misfire counts on all cylinders so I strongly believe that the dealer is wrong in saying its normal to see misfire counts in the system.....I mean I'd understand if there was only 5 or 10 misfires but when it finds 200 or 300 on multiple cylinders that indicates a problem to me.

Anyway, It does it very infrequently so I'm not too awful concerned but it happens so I figured I'd mention it in case somebody else has experienced it.

This is my 6th Ram since the 1994 body change and I have to admit I am very pleased with the Ram trucks. My 1994 was the only lemon I've bought and it was bought back by Chrysler under the Florida Lemon Law due to 9 transmission repairs in 12 months.

I do have to say that Chrysler went way out of their way to please me after I filed the Lemon law papers. The dealership that sold it to me helped me get everything filed and were very pleasant about the situation. Chrysler gave me what I paid for the truck new in a cashiers check, they also gave me a second check for my down payment and did not deduct anything for the rebates I had received when I bought the truck. They also paid for a rental for 60 days so I could find another vehicle. So when everything was said and done I ended up making $2500 on the deal.... ($2500 being the rebate on the truck when I bought it)

I bought a Chevy after that but Chrysler sent me a letter offering me $10K off any new 1997 if I'd come back to Dodge so I did. I've owned Ram's ever since. I've had 1994, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2006.

Overall they are really good vehicles in my opinion as long as you plan ahead and take care of the typical Dodge quirks.

My current Ram is a 2006 1500 SLT ThunderRoad Crew Cab. 20" Chrome wheels, loaded up nicely. I used to drive it daily but a couple years ago we moved farther from my job so I decided that it was better to go buy a cheap car and rack up 70 miles a day on that then put them on the Ram. So now the Ram spends all week M-F in the garage while I drive the car to work. I do drive it on the weekends to keep the battery up but it rarely gets much more then 20 miles a week on it anymore. Kinda a waste of $36,000 but what the hell, if I need to haul something I know where it is and it isn't costing me anything sitting there. Hell, my wife now tells me I have one hell of a expensive lawn ornament lol

But it's a great truck and I do enjoy driving it when I do.

Update from Nov 7, 2010: Current Mileage=47,000 Misfire has disappeared over time. Not sure if it has anything to do with the recommendation of the dealer to add Lucas Fuel injector cleaner to it every 5000 miles. But either way I have not experienced it in quite a while and I have added the Lucas every 5K for over a yr now.
