The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid. While driving approximately 35 mph, the "service power steering soon" message suddenly displayed before the power steering malfunctioned. The steering wheel became very difficult to turn. After turning the vehicle off and restarting it, the "service power steering now" message displayed and the driver was unable to turn the steering wheel at all. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (lebanon Ford, 770 columbus ave, lebanon, Ohio 45036) where it was diagnosed that the steering gear rack was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 164,000.

While driving the car, we suddenly got the message 'service power steering now' and 'service advancetrac.' Luckily, no accident occurred, but it was extremely difficult to steer the vehicle out of traffic and to safety.

My daughter was driving home from store going 25 miles hour and the power steering suddenly went out. We have checked to see if this car is on recall list and it is not but it says online it has the same parts that were recalled on the 2011 Fusion. This is very dangerous if it happened on freeway. This needs to be addressed.

Power steering failed with 'service power steering' and 'service advancetrack' warnings, making car dangerous and hard to steer. 2011 and some later models were recalled for similar issue.

While driving at low speed on city street (~25 mph), power steering stopped working and error lights appeared for both power steering and advancetrac. Took to mechanic could not diagnose the source of the problem, although power steering worked again after they adjusted air pressure in tires and cleared out codes. I remain concerned after reading about recalls of later year Fusion models for what sounds like the same issue.

I was driving car at very low speed in town. Service power steering now light and advancetrac lights suddenly came on. There was complete loss of power steering. Had car towed to dealer. They said this occurred because of several low tire pressure warnings (which I never saw). Charged me about $150 to reset computer. This is a dangerous situation. I see many similar complaints online about the Ford Fusion but Ford has refused to recall the 2010 for this problem. Please require Ford to recall these vehicles and fix the problem before people die because of this. The problem apparently recurs unles an expensive repair is done.

When I started the engine I got a power steering assist fault warning on my dash and had no power steering. Had it towed to my mechanic, he told wiring had been chewed by a rodent. He repaired the wiring but it still wouldn't work. Had it towed to dealer and steering unit was replaced about $2000. Three weeks later same warning when I went to start it. Towed to dealer again, told faulty part, would be replaced under warranty, no charge. Went down to look at car and asked about pro-actively using rodent tape before installing new part as a precaution to prevent any future problems. Was shown that there wasn't any visible damage. Called me the next day to tell me there was rodent damage to wiring harness that they hadn't seen, that they had cut open the wiring cover and found the wires chewed. My question as to how they knew to cut open the shroud to find the chewed wires in the shroud was answered that there was a "pin-hole" "tooth-hole" in the shroud, but 3 of the 4 wires were separated.. they could try to fix wiring for about $400. Spoke to service manager and he agreed to repair it and absorb the $400, as it was about 3 hours labor and would only "cost" the dealer about $60. Next day he called to say they repaired the wiring but still didn't work, so they would have to replace the part and it would cost me another $1,997.80. This was Friday and I said I'd call him on Monday. I think it is absurd that a consumer is forced into a $2000 repair for a wire, and believe there is a faulty design which would render a $2000 part useless when a wire is cut.

I got a slow flat while driving my 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid, which engaged the "low tire pressure" warning on the in-dash message center. Soon after that notification appeared the "service power steering now" (in red text, so definitely not good) and "service advancetrac" (in yellow) messages followed. I pulled into a gas station to check the tire, and upon restarting the car realized I now had no power steering. After changing the tire the messages remained and power steering was still gone. I drove the hobbled car (luckily in a straight line) to the nearby huntersville Ford dealership, where it sits in the overnight lot now awaiting the bad news. How is such a dangerous issue, already identified within the same product line and generation, not being dealt with equally across the lineup?

Fusion Hybrid

  • 93,000 miles
My 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid suddenly lost power steering on 08/10/2017. The 'service power steering now' warning light came on. My son was fortunately in a parking lot and not a highway when this occurred as he lost all ability to turn the vehicle. I had the car towed to a local Ford dealership. I read up about recalls but the dealership said this was only for 2011 and 2012 Ford Fusion. The car has been operated on roads and highways throughout and never taken offroad. The dealership says I have to replace the the steering gear and rack assembly at a cost of $2000. This is a faulty part and the car cannot be driven without a replacement. I know there is an open NHTSA investigation that hopefully will be concluded soon. I have no choice but to pay for the repair and hope for reimbursement from Ford for this faulty part later.

While driving this vehicle, it became very difficult to steer the car. We were told the power steer needs to be fixed. There was no warning sign, it just happened all of a sudden. It could have caused a wreck because my 19 year old was driving at the time. It is especially difficult to steer while pressing the brakes. Very unsafe.

Fusion Hybrid

  • 135,000 miles
On two or three occasions after starting the car and shifting into drive, a warning light came on stating "power steering assist failure" and I could tell the car had no power steering. Each time I would shut the engine off, restart the vehicle, and the problem was rectified. On June 1, 2017, the same problem occurred but this time the power steering never returned. I called a Ford dealer and explained the problem and a service technician gave me a suggestion to disconnect and then connect the battery. This did not help. I brought the car into the dealership for repair and they found the whole steering assembly needed to be replaced costing in the neighborhood of $1750. After reading numerous reports of the same problem on the internet I decided to file a complaint to Ford and also to any consumer protection agencies.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid. While backing out of a driveway without warning, the power steering failed. The contact stated that the vehicle became difficult to operate. The contact stated that the vehicle was cycled off and then on; however, the power steering still failed to operate as intended. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
