Windstar Limited 3.8L

Van stalls and runs bad after it rains. This problem is a reoccurring problem for me and seems the previous owner as well. I replaced several different sensors, spark plugs and wires several times in the 2 years I've owned it. A vacuum leak from a hose by plug 6 I believe, that kept coming loose caused some of the stalling problems but not all of them. Same code comes up, Misfire with plug 5 even after I replaced it. And my last plugs were literally fried. So something is terribly wrong here and no one can figure it out. Never had problems like this with my other Windstar, but can't remember what year it was.

After the the engine warms up it idles rough and then stalls after idling for 5 to 10 minutes. The engine light is on and the code I receive explains that the engine is running a lean mixture. I changed the spark plugs, plug wires and coil pack and it is still doing it.

That didn't help. i did a compression test and all cylinders read between 175 to 185 in 4 full cranks . I pulled the Intake air scoops off to look inside the engine and noticed a lot of oil on the air scoops residue with a little oil sitting in the bottom of the ail scoop and a lot of carbon or oil gunk build-up going down into the cylinders. when i look in air intake in cylinder 2 on the head it had about a dime size of oil sitting on the back of the valve.

Windstar LX 3.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 100,000 miles

Vehicle has a rough idle that typically presents itself 2-5minutes after start-up when the vehicle comes to a stop (intersection close to home for example). Sounds like it's going to quit (and has on a couple of occasions). Runs fine at speed. The vehicle is now at 155k miles and the problem has progressed to rough idle almost all the time, but it still runs fine at speed.

My local ford Dealer said it would take $600 to $800 to repair. The repair they came up with was to replace the intake air scoop gasket. When removing the air scoop I didn't see any problem with the gasket itself nor did I see where it was allowing any bypass of debris from outside the engine. Personally I don't think Ford knows what's going on either and gave me a high estimate so they can start replacing parts until they find whats really failing or wrong. They have been wrong several other times on another vehicle I owned.
