Car had 63,264 miles on it and as the second owner the manufacturer warranty only goes to 6 years and 60,000 miles. Car died on way home and I had it towed to Hyundai dealer. They said the engine needed to be replaced due to failure of lower bearing. Said it would be $10,500, but after submitting for a goodwill coverage, they finally answered 2 weeks later and said they would pay half.
After some research online, I see this is a common problem with their Elantra 1.8L engines going out around 60K. Should have done the research BEFORE purchasing obviously. Dumbfounds me that this is a known problem and Hyundai won't address it (from what I understand they are under a class action lawsuit for this very problem). Absolutely detestable behavior on their part. Will tell everyone I know to steer clear of Hyundai (let's not forget their even bigger issue with their 2.4L SUV engines either). So disappointing.
Bought the car used but certified from the dealership. Had it a little over a year when I was driving home from work and the engine made a weird noise and then started knocking. I drove it straight to the dealership where I bought it. They all looked at me funny when I pulled it in because they could all hear it as I drove it into the shop. They gave me a loaner car and said they would call me when they figured out what was wrong with it. Two days later they called me and said a bearing went out in the lower part of the engine and it caused a rod to go thru my cylinders. They said I needed a new engine. They said that they ordered it and it was back-ordered but to keep the loaner and they would let me know when it was fixed. After about a month and a half I called to get an update and was told the engine that was sent to them after they installed it, they realized it had a crack in the block and they were waiting on another to arrive. About three and a half months in total I finally got my car back.
