I was driving our 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and I heard some knocking noise that I wasn't familiar with.

then the oil light comes on. I immediately pull off the freeway. I had my wife , mom and grandson with me

I didn't want to get stuck on freeway with them in the car. I let the car sit for a little bit then check the oil, it shows no oil on the dip stick . How can that be we always change the oil and have never been told the car has been losing oil or had any oil leaks. so I started putting oil in the car not 1 , 2 but 3 quarts of oil how can that be. After putting in the oil I tried driving the car but still had the same noise I knew I had a big problem. Why did the warning oil light come on after that much oil was missing? So I drove it a mile thinking maybe the oil needed to kick in but still same noise . I decided to have the car towed to the Dealer. The next day when I went to the Dealer the gal behind the counter said you need an new motor . she just turned it on and knew? why because she knew that Hyundai had this problem with the motors. I did some research and found plenty of complaints and there has been a recall on the gas motor but not the Hybrids. Why not the Hybrids , the problem is in manufacturing and they both have the same issue . bottom line I have one year left to pay on a car I can't use. Please do your research on any car before you buy it. this will be my last Hyundai!!! ps new motor 10,000 bucks

I never knew I had a recall car. Hyundai never Informed me about any recalls on my car. 3 days ago my car “2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid” caught on fire & before it did I pulled over to let it cool down because I saw smoke coming from my vents while driving on the highway.s I made it to the closet neighborhood near my home and pulled over to cool it down for 10 minutes. I start it back up - it was fine 5 minutes later. I made it to a stop sign & it caught on fire while I was in it. I was really devastated I lost almost everything - I even lost my phone & important paper work stating from Vaseline everything was fine, Engine was in great shape, battery etc.

The car was making a strange sound from the engine, for the first few days with no problem nor engine lights was showing. On the third day engine started to lose power off and on and we thought it strange. Stopped the car and went to a local mechanic to look at the car. On inspection the engine light came on and we were told that the car is slowly ceasing. Whomever sold us the car knew of the problem but did not disclose the fault. We towed the car to the dealership for service and they said the engine is knocking and that we need to replace it at a cost of $15,000! We asked how can the repair be more than the cost of the car? We were told they would not replace the engine with a junk yard engine and that we needed a new one.

The dealership said since we are 2nd owner the warranty does not cover the car. We are attempting to get Hyundai USA to assist otherwise we paid $13,000 for a car that lasted less than two months and cost more than its worth to repair it! We had the car inspected by the same Hyundai Dealership before purchase and said the car was good to purchase so we did. Now they are unwilling to help. It is so very frustrating knowing that the dealership can say a car is good to buy only to knock less in than two months after purchase. Can anyone help with this situation? Do we sue? Are these cars useless at about 60k miles? Anyone with information please respond. Thank you.

Starting on 02/28/2020, the engine all of a sudden started knocking for no known reason. I thought a belt was loose or something like that. Unfortunately I was leaving for vacation the next day and did not want to drive the vehicle from Philadelphia to JFK Airport in NYC, so I left it home.

Upon returning from vacation on 03/11, I towed the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership. Being that they only have one hybrid tech, they said it would take a week to even get looked at,.........fine. Then the pandemic went into full swing and the dealership closed for over a month. So sometime in April they got back to me and said that the vehicle needs an engine replacement at the cost of $14,000. Yes, $14,000! They said that it’s not covered under warranty because I am not the original owner, but to help me out, they would cover half the cost, so I would be responsible for paying $7,000 as if I just have that kind of money just laying around.

They said that this is a common problem with the vehicle, however, the recall is only involving the 2.0 engines. I contacted the national customer service to complain about the price, to which they responded, “that’s the decision and it’s final”. So I let the car stay at the dealership while I pondered my options because I’m not paying for a car that I cannot drive. I contacted the national customer service again a few weeks later and explained that when I got the car, the seller told me that it was fully warrantied 10 years/100,000 miles and that this is a known, common issue with this car. Also that $7,000 is an insanely high. I’m an unemployed, single father of four, please reconsider your decision to cover the cost. A few days later, a manager called me back and took all my information. He said that he would be in touch with the dealership and get back to me with a decision. I haven’t heard anything yet, but if they don’t cover the cost, I’m just gonna let the bank take the car back. I cannot pay such a high car note for an non-driveable car.

Also note, there was never a engine warning light and I’ve had regular oil changes.
