Veloster Tech Pkg 1.6L

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

I bought my Veloster 6 years ago over the Internet through a Dealer just outside of Toronto. When I bought it, it had 98000KM on it so was still under warranty. I picked the car up in Toronto and drove it back to Ottawa and I loved it. It was fantastic on gas, very comfortable to drive and handled real nice. Other than oil changes I never had to do anything because it ran fine.

Then about a month ago I had an odbII meter hooked up looking for errors and everything was fine. There were old error messages there and it asked me if I wanted to delete and I decided yes! Not sure if that was a good idea. That day I started having starter problems. It wouldn't turn over so, no start. I thought the starter was finished. It would start downhill, kick start. I did this once and had to drive for about an hour. When I got back I shut the car off and tried to start it then it started right back up. I had this problem a few more times so I was going to get a new starter. Then it just started working again! it's been working fine ever since?

But then a few days later it starts to pop out of 4th gear and only 4th gear? This goes on for a few days and then it just disappears?? So it's been about a month and I am out at my Daughters new house building an office for her. It's about a 30-minute drive into the country. I leave to come home and I make it halfway and the gear popping starts again. I make 3/4 of the way home and it pops out of gear and that's it! I can't get it into any gear and I am driving 80km an hour in heavy traffic in the far left of 3 lanes. I have to somehow get into the far right lane to turn right at the next lights. I made it into the right lane but that was it and had to pull over. A cop pulls a guy over for speeding and then, of course, comes back to check me out.

When I explained what was happening she said her brother had the same problem with the same model car! So she leaves and I am trying everything possible to get it into gear. Now it's getting dark and it's getting colder. I try to get the car to move and I have to rev it up to about 4K and it starts to move but I have to keep accelerating. I had to stop for lights once and it was a real treat to get it moving again. By the time I got it home, it was smoking from under the hood and there was a smell of burning. It will not go into gear and it's stuck like that in my parking spot.

In 6 years I have put 8000km on it. When I first bought it I had the trannie checked out because I felt it wasn't shifting quite right. They came back and told Me it was fine and actually one of the better ones. Then 8000km later no transmission! I have written Hyundai but they never answer. Still got a year to pay on it. Can't afford $1400.00 on a seniors pension. 108,000 km on it 8k over the warranty and that's also all I have driven the car. I took care of that car like it was my kid. It has never spent a night at home outside, it's in underground parking. I wash it usually twice a month. Other than the grocery store it's never outside in the winter. This seems to be a major problem throughout that line. Hyundai should have to fix it!

Veloster 1.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 107,000 miles

This 2012 Veloster starts and rides perfectly... for a while. Each time after about 10 miles it just essentially goes into limp/neutral mode. I can hit the gas and the motor rev's but no movement and slows down. Each time I have to pull over somewhere. One time I was on a one lane road and was a huge problem. I have to stop, turn the car off, open the door, close it (to reset) and turn it on. 75% of the time that works. The other 25% of the time I have to let it sit for a few minutes....normally 5 minutes or so. Then it starts and moves on.

As long as I am making short trips, this car is great. Everything I am reading online is that this problem, in various similar forms happens all over the country. I don't see a definite fix. My local trans guy said it had to be a loose battery cable. Low and behold I found a loose positive cable and thought that would fix it. Nope. I don't have the time or the money to trouble shoot with local shops or the dealership. I'm at a loss.

Veloster 1.6L

You should google "Pull over when safe" and "Protection mode". It has a dual clutch that makes this a not-so-nice thing to happen.

Veloster GLS 1.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 81,000 miles

From what I can understand, this is a specialized transmission and if it goes out, you're screwed. Just coming here to car complaints, it did not show what this as a problem, but google the 2012 transmission and you start to see. Or the 2012 Pullover when in safe and protection mode. This is when you start getting the real feel for this problem on the 2012 Veloster. My Veloster's whole transmission has now died and to replace it is basically the value of the whole car. ($5000).

Veloster 1.6L

DCT 6 speed, gears 2,4,6 R won't engage. seems like a clutch adjustment, but the diagnostic tool for adjusting motor driven clutch actuator errors out. "Speed difference IPS to OPS too low"
