NHTSA — Electronic Stability Control Problems

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 is starting to have the same problems as previous model years, including the headlights blowing out due to bad connectors.

The wiring harness connections aren't a big deal to replace, as long as your dealer or mechanic doesn't charge you an arm & a leg to "diagnose" the problem.

"takata recall " I have been haing issues with the drivers side low beam going out, had it changed several times and service place said it will continue to go out as the wires are melted and burnt and would need to be a rewired. I also having issues while driving the dash lights all go out and then come back on, feels like it loses the power steering and then goes back to normal but happens several times through out the day while driving. Dash lights, radio everything goes off, the exterior lights stay on but not inside.

I own a 2009 Pontiac G6. Well, the door says it's a 2009, but when I enter the VIN it comes back as a 2010. I have researched and found that my car was not included in the GM recall for the torque sensor assembly, which I find absurd. The power steering in my car keeps going out while I'm driving. I have almost crashed a number of times. This is a seriously dangerous defect. All the research I have done says GM is aware that this problem is affecting 2010's as well, yet they're not included in the recall. That is not fair. Why should I have to pay to fix a problem that is a recall on my GM vehicle, my vehicle just isn't included because my car was manufactured at the end of 2009, so it's considered a 2010. That is not fair. This problem is affecting hundreds of thousands of GM vehicles. They need to expand the recall to include 2010. This isn't some silly little thing that shouldn't be worried about. This is my steering. I could crash and die because they won't expand the recall. I really hope this is seen and something is done about this. I'm not the only one who is frustrated beyond words. It shouldn't be my responsibility. GM messed up and should fix their problems in their vehicles. They should stand by their vehicles.

Dear NHTSA; I own a 2009 Pontiac G6 that within the last week incurred a power steering failure. Recall research shows that on March 2014 the NHTSA required GM to issue a recall for this exact problem, however, it only covered the G6 models up to the year 2009, which my car was not included. The service advisor at the dealership acknowledged that the "problem" was very similar to the steering problem for earlier models that are subject to the recall. However, since the 2009 model year was not included in the NHTSA recall, the cost to repair the problem falls to the consumer and is estimated to be in the $1,800 to $2,000 range. This is clearly a safety issue and mirrors the same characteristic's as earlier models included in the recall. I have contacted GM regarding this matter and have been assured that a local customer service representative will be contacting me within 48 hours. While I appreciate GM's willingness to "consider" the matter, I urge the NHTSA to re-visit the model years subject to the recall. The consumer should not be burdened with the cost of repairing what is obviously a design defect. Further and more importantly is safety for the passengers and other drivers on the road.

I have replaced 6 bulbs both driver and passenger side low beam lights I thought they were blown but come to find out they short because they are melting. I have replaced the wiring and the headlight sockets just for them to melt again. I have called chevorlet and GM motors to see why this isn't a safety issue"?" tonight I drove down a very dangerous road (we've had a wreck on this road every night this week) in very dangerous fog and my headlights went out thank god one of my brights worked and I had a quick reaction going 55mph not everyone will and that is a shame because chevorlet & GM motors know that they have an issue as they told me in our phone conversations. The wires to my headlights are melting I try not to drive at night because I'm terrified they will catch on fire as I'm driving down the road. Now I am horrified that all lights will go out. This is a huge safety issue!! we're recalling takata airbags (airbags protect you in a crash) but not headlights going out while driving 55 mph down the road at night" that is putting everyone's safety at risk. Why are we not trying to prevent fatalities??"!!!!

I have had a recurring problem for the past 3 years, where the power steering, traction control and electronic stability control all atop working at the same time. I have sought assistance from GM. The dealership tells me the car isn't storing a code. I have provided them with pictures, but they choose not to help. The problem is a known problem on other years of the Pontiac G6. GM website says they fix the problem on a case by case basis. Picture and video proof mean nothing if the car isn't storing a code. Codes flash across display that say "check power steering " "service traction" "service ESC". only way for me to clear is to shut off car and turn back on. All peer steering is lost when problem occurs. Although I've listed. Only one date, which was the most recent, the problem occurred in 1/2014, twice in 7/2014, 12/2016 and in 3/2017.

A friend following me 09-21-2016 noticed my brake lights were on constantly. Driving home that night I could tell the brake light stayed on, unless I was applying the brake and they would go off. Also cruise control would not work. Made an appointment with the local GM dealership where the car was purchased new for 09-27-2016. Dealership diagnosed car with a bad brake switch. Car was repaired and picked up on 09-30-2016 (brake switch replaced) cost $194.81. Drove the car on a 300 mile trip on 10-13-2016. Traction warning light would come on intermittently and when the light was on cruise control would not work. Also checked on brake lights and now they stay constantly. Traction warning light stays on constantly also now.. the car did go on for the recall notice back in 2014. We were not experiencing any problems prior to the last couple of months.

Lights on the car starting coming on the air bag lights stay on now and will not go off.the heater in the seats also stopped working.and now when I turn the steering wheels there is a grinding sound.I thought it was the cv axles replaced, and it did no good.it continues to make the grinding sounds when I turn, and its hard to turn the steering wheel at times it locks up.the electric systems seems to act strange with lights blinking on the dash board sometimes.many times I have trouble starting the car and have had the starter checked out and they cannot find a problem, when it does this all the lights start flashing.once I was driving in the mountains at a speed around 45 miles an hour and my car completely cut off on top of the mountains.

On 4/7/15, while driving heard chimes. All icons on instrument panel turned on. The fuel gauge needle moved to empty. The low fuel gauge turned on. All this indicating malfunction. The odometer turned off and the code error came on and turned off; then the odometer came back on. All the icons on the instrument panel turned off except for the security light icon which stayed on. It felt as if someone was attempting to disable my vehicle. Later that day turned the vehicle on and everything seemed normal, like it reset itself. On 4/8/15, after driving approximately 70 miles on the highway, the security light icon turned on and stayed on. I took the vehicle directly to the dealer and they informed me they would have to diagnose the vehicle. The result was inconclusive, they did not find anything wrong. So not only was I put in an unsafe condition, this end up costing me $140 just to tell me they could not find anything - not only am I in the hole for $140 but I am back to square one. I feel GM should foot this bill as a customer courtesy due to the predicament this vehicle put me in. This should never have happened to a vehicle that is 6 years old and 80,000 miles.

Wife was driving vehicle onto rt 46 here in austintown, Ohio when the power steering light came on and she lost steering. She had not reached the speed limit of 40mph when this occurred. She managed to get the vehicle of the road and into a gas station lot going up over a curb parked it and then called me to come and get her. I drove the vehicle home about a quarter of a mile without the power steering. I then called Pontiac's customers services and to no prevail got any satisfaction. I then made an appointment with spitzer autoworld here in lordstown, Ohio for Friday Aug 1st.,had the vehicle looked over, they told me that the problem was with the steering column and that it has to be replaced. I see that GM has recalls for steering problems on the same year, make and model but my VIN# doesnot fall in this recall. So as of Monday Aug 1st I will be back on the phone with Pontiac.

The contact owns a 2009 Pontiac G6. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the contact was informed by another motorist that the brake lights on the vehicle were constantly illuminated. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number 14V252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). The part for the repair was unavailable. The dealer was notified and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 65,000. Updated 08/11/14

As I was coming around a turn at my house, I lost all electrical it was like my car shut off. I was close to hitting a stop sign and a house on my street. I did go up the curb. I lost power steering so my steering wheel was harder to turn. Once I got the car stopped my vehicle came back on automatically. At 116,000 miles I drove to ripley and parked my car at work. When I went out to lunch my car would start, but wouldn't move forward. It would only go in reverse and roll backwards. I ended up replacing the transmission and some wires. I don't know if this could be a defect, but it only had 116,000 miles and they are supposed to last at least until 200,000.

I purchased this car in summer 2013. It was fine for a couple months then the cruise control started going out and the ESC and traction control would code at the same time. I searched on the internet and found the GM service bulletin that said to remove the connectors from the computer and apply dialectic grease due to corrosion. This would work 30 to 60 days then I would have to apply more grease. Before christmas I was driving home at night and noticed that my brake lights were stuck on. I found that this would often happen at the same time that the other problems would code and other times the brake lights would just come on. I have applied grease several times this winter and it doesn't work anymore. The ESC and traction control code at random times, and the cruise control becomes inoperable. The air bag light is now on and stays on. These are all annoying but the issue that scares me is the brake lights coming on at random times when I don't touch the brake pedal. That is obviously unsafe and I would hope that GM would step up and fix it. They wouldn't have issued the service bulletin if they didn't know there was a problem, and the dealership I purchased it from had smeared the connectors heavy with grease so they must have read the service bulletin too.

The cruise control will work and then in the middle of driving it quits. This seems to be related to the brake lights not working properly. Also, seems related to these two messages some time coming on: "service traction" and "service ESC."
