The check engine light came on a couple of days ago and was told it was the converter. I'm having a more major problem fixed - intake gaskets, so not sure what this will cost later.

after having the catalytic converter replaced at my local firestone store, 7mos later ive got a service engine soon light on again....take it back they tell me its because i now have a leaking head gasket!! BUT after doing a pressure test for twenty min. with engine running (cool) not even close to running hot not one bit of leak off of pressure. no loss of coolant, engine runs fine. the code for the lite is for the cat converter. firestone replaced the converter but says since haedgasket is leaking they will not warranty it again!! also no oil in coolant or coolant in my oil!! WHAT THE F....any advise???

We noticed our car started losing power. We pushed on the gas, and it would take forever for it to get up to speed. We also started getting very poor gas mileage (13 mpg). We took it in to the dealership and were lucky enough to have this under warranty. If I remember correctly, the warranty is for up to 80,000 miles. It is a VERY expensive fix otherwise.

My 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT gradually started losing power, then BOOM I had no power as of October 2008. When accelerating the car jerks and shifts but doesn't stall (knock on wood). At one point it almost overheated and the service engine soon light came on as well. All the while, my low coolant light has been on for months and it's not the sensor its something else. After reading on this and seeing another person has this problem, I've concluded it could be the catalytic converter.

This will be the last GM product I purchase if this problem is not resolved by year's end. I had a Tahoe and had a similar problem but turns out it was the fuel pump. When these vehicles lose power, that's the end. :-(
