NHTSA — Air Bags Problems

2007 Saturn Aura (Page 1 of 5) Seal Of This Might Hurt Notes: The Saturn Aura was a mid-size car meant to replace the somewhat problematic L-Series. Unfortunately, the Aura brought its own problems: namely cheap brake parts that needed early replacement and a gear shifter that could say it’s in park while the transmission was still engaged.

Brake problems, including uneven wear and warped rotors that cause the car to wobble, are common complaints from 2007 owners. Did GM use metal for its rotors that can’t stand the heat? That’s what some say, and it’s hard to argue when reports show that rotors could start to warp as early as 500 miles off the dealer lot.

Meanwhile, a busted gear shifter cable lead to some unwanted rollaways. That’s because the shifter could say “Park” while the transmission was still in drive, reverse or neutral. A defect investigation into the issue was opened in 2011, eventually leading to a recall of 56,000 vehicles in 2014.

Service airbags light has been coming off and on since 2013. It will stay off at times up to 6 months then come on every other day for a month then stay off for months. The light comes on when the car is in motion usually when on highway but has come on when driving on city streets. Dealer says its a module and will cost $800 to $1000 to fix. Feel this needs to be a recall item. Dealer said airbags will not deploy when service airbag light is on.

At about 80K miles the passenger airbag occupied light would alternate between on and off while driving. At about 93K miles the service airbag light comes on and the service airbag message on the information center is on. Reset the message and the red service airbag light remains "on". the passenger seat occupied light indicates "off".

  • 50,000 miles
Passenger seat air bag sensor was replaced under warranty, 20,000 miles. Failed again at approx 45-50 thousand miles. Air bags are turned off when this happens. New fix included new wiring and sensors- plus a few hundred dollars. GM obviously knew of the problem- they changed he wiring etc. This is dangerous because of the entire airbag system failing. The second fix should have been a recall- with the price picked up by GM. This failure was intermittent and generally happened while driving. This a definite safety issue.

The dealer diagnosed that the harness needed to be weathered. The contact did not remember the second part that the dealer replaced. The failures recurred every year since 2007, at the onset of winter. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 150.

  • 83,000 miles
Passenger air bag light will shift from on to off randomly when a passenger is in the front passenger seat and the car is either stationary or in motion. Sometimes the service air bag notice comes on when a passenger exits the car, then goes away after a few seconds. The red warning light on the the dash does not stay on constantly, but will illuminate with the service air bag notice and then go out after a few seconds. This condition has occurred intermittently for the past two weeks. There is no way to know if the passenger air bag is functioning or not.

Summary: General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in 2004-2012 Malibu, 2004-2007 Malibu maxx, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles. On these vehicles, over time an increased resistance can develop in the body control module (BCM) connection system and result in voltage fluctuations or intermittency in the brake apply sensor (bas) circuit that can cause service brake lamp malfunction. As a result, the service brake lamps may illuminate when the service brakes are not being applied, or may not illuminate when the service brakes are being applied. Additionally, cruise control may not engage. If cruise control is engaged, additional service brake pedal travel may be required to disengage it. Service brake pedal application may not be required to move the shift lever out of park, or additional service brake pedal travel may be required to move the shift lever out of park. Traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features, if equipped, may be disabled. Service ESC and/or traction control tell-tales may illuminate with this condition. Safety risk: These conditions may increase the risk of a crash. Remedy: Dealers are to attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and on the bas and harness connector, and relearn the brake pedal home position free of charge.

Takata recall: During work hours, when the car is parked out in the hot Georgia summer sun all day I get a service air bag alert when I start it. I have been trying to park it under the trees when possible during the hottest days and this keeps the alert from happening for the most part. Sometimes though, this service air bag alert comes on for no apparent reason while I have been driving it for awhile as well. However, I am not on the airbag recall list. While at the mechanics, the alert would not come up and I was told to bring it back when it does.

I carried my car to the Chevrolet dealer after getting a "service airbag" message I was told that this was dangerous and that I needed to replace the passenger module and sensor. The cost quote was over $1200. It is being repaired as I write. However, since they admitted that this is dangerous, since my car has less than 54,000 miles, and based on the enormous complaints, it seems obvious that this should be a recall situation.

When driving with a front seat passenger the "service airbag" warning comes on and in the middle display on top of the dash board it says, "passenger airbag off." When I clear the message using the clear button on my steering wheel it will then say, "passenger airbag on." This happens several times each time I drive with a passenger in the front seat. It has been happening for several months. I took it to the dealer and after 10+ hrs of diagnostics, test driving, etc. They say I need a new passenger seat airbag module and a cost of just more than $1,000. They have had several 2007 Saturn Aura's come in with the same issue. At this point they say it is not covered by GM as a warranty issue. I think it should be. Apparently if I get in a wreck while the sensor says there is no one in the front seat when there in fact is, the airbag will not work....and my passenger is looking at the potential of serious injury or death. If this is not a safety issue with this GM car, I don't know what is.
